And that's a bad thing how? Rorschach was awesome and he killed people, he's a true hero.

Is this one of those situations when we all wish you employed emoticons?

This post needs revising.

While I do think Rorschach is awesome, I think it for other reasons. He is the only superhero to stay active after heroes were outlawed. He's uncompromising and he sacrificed his life so the truth could get out. He is awesome, but not because he kills people.

Well, I now at least partially agree with your opinion, if not fully.  I do get really upset every time he bites it =/  Gotta say, though, a little bit more compromise and a little bit less hobo/misogyny/racism might've helped.

He had a job at the Gunga diner. And I can't quite remember any evidence of the racism or misogyny.

I can't remember any evidence that he actually had a job either. But lets not turn this into Watchmen thread :P

... His "job" was carrying a "The End is Nigh" sign around, and there was a hell of a lot of racism and misogyny.  All women are whores, blah blah blah blah blah.  Whores whores whores.  You should reread the GN, because it was bleeding with that stuff.  And honestly, he made his livelihood by mooching off of Dan and stealing his beans and sugar.

Enough Watchmen talk, though, anyway.

Frankly, most of the women he called whores were either prostitutes or had a modeling history. And I think I took what he said was "work" too literally.

No more Watchmen talk, after all, who's watching the watchmen?

But I want to discuss how ridiculous his uncompromisingness was and what a small man it made him! And also how completely meaningless his violence was! :(

Wow, I didn't know about that additional meaning of the word.

Considering the universe it is set in we can assume the meaning.

My take on Rorschach, since it doesn't seem to be going away.

I loved him too... as a character... in that comic... in any other context, especially in real life, I would consider him a monster.  The only thing I actually admire about the guy is his integrity.  He is consistent and honest and dedicated in his beliefs, even if those beliefs are misguided.  In most stories, those misguided beliefs and ruthless pursuit of them would make him more of a villain, integrity or not.

But then you compare him to the rest of the cast...

Comedian:  Morality collapsed under the weight of his own cynicism.
Dr Manhattan:  Detached from humanity to the point of barely caring.
Silk Spectre/Nite Owl:  Decent people with good intentions and heads mostly on straight... but their true motivation for super hero work was addiction to the thrill, which didn't make for very dedicated heroes.
Ozymandias:  So full of himself that he was blind to true nature of his actions.

Rorschach:  The only guy who showed real conviction, drive, dedication, consistency, selflessness, etc.  He ended up standing out so much for being the only character with these qualities, which are normally basic requirements for a Straight A protagonist.  It's not surprising that so many people defaulted to seeing him as such.  Too bad he was also a raving lunatic.  Alan Moore did NOT intend for this guy to be seen in a positive light.  He was written as satire.
