Playing dwarf fortress ruined me for oblivion because I couldn't see how the ruins could possibly have been living settlements; they're never laid out efficiently or defensibly. 

I never had the sense they were meant to be a livable place. They simply seemed like elaborate tomb complexes.

Ceiling crusher can be done by having a cave in , just......... be careful what you have beneath.

If they don't you're not doing them right. If you have a 3x3 block suspended by a support and a bronze colossus smashes the support, you've just made yourself a masterwork statue.

What?  I'd rather a dwarf dodge into magma than get caved in on, at least they can survive burns over 90% of their body.

If they don't you're not doing them right. If you have a 3x3 block suspended by a support and a bronze colossus smashes the support, you've just made yourself a masterwork statue.

The question is where to find a bronze colossus.

This is my take on the Ayleid ruins, but it's not supported by the lore, so make of it what you will:

I always interpreted the Ayleid ruins as the below-ground portions are storage, tombs, that sort of thing while major portions of it (like living areas) were actually above ground and have weathered away.  (Perhaps wood supported by stone, the wood would rot away and be gone but you'd still have stone foundations, possibly walls and pillars.)

Find an area with light colored stone, like alunite or limestone, and get building.  Hell, the layouts are already done for you

Fantastic ideas. But the light coloured stone.. easier said than done. I'll just have to keep embarking on random places I guess until I find it.

Yeah, that is my one issue with the new finder listings, I can only replicate my incredibly lucky temple area (Two listed layers of marble) by complete chance.  Although using Flux Stone as your only search criteria will probably give you some decent starting points.
