questions about desert

1: can i have animals in  sand desert without having caverns?

2: do farmable plants grow in sand?

3:if not, can i feed my population of 100 dwarves with fish only?

 help appreciated. thanks.

Current fort "Windstandards" is a remarkable success in a desert.

1: Yes. Camels are abundant. I have also had yaks, goats, marmots, honey badgers and buzzards.

2: Yes. I have 6 3x3 plots on Z-1 growing in black sand with a nice green glass roof for no real reason other than its a pretty roof.

3: Fish will run out quickly. Seeing as you can farm (and herbalsim was suprisingly effective in my desert) and hunt for meat, you wont need to fish.

I like the idea of fishing in the desert a lot though. It's somewhat surrealistic. ;)  Are you sitting next to an ocean?
