[df_27_176_38c] A masterwork of "Carpenter Name&quo
« on: February 27, 2008, 08:18:00 am »

My legendary carpenter keeps losing his masterworks. I did a bit of testing and it is related to his masterwork barrels filled with booze. What I did was to forbid all his masterwork barrels through the stock menu and then allow booze inside it. Then I waited and got the message and looked at my forbidden masterwork barrels and one had its quality downgraded to superior quality.
The stack of dwarven ale inside had also gone down from size 5 to 4.

Is this bug in any way related to the hidden booze quality?

Luckily my legendary carpenter is kept ecstatic through other means but I'm considering not using him for barrel making till this bug has been looked at.

Thank you for a great game Toady.

If this is a bug, it actually seems to me to be a reasonable feature, wooden items damaged by use.

It's not reasonable that dwarves would go bezerk from items they made being used.

"Who's been sleeping in my bed?!"
"Um, that's the King. He wanted a masterwork bed that didn't menace with any spikes, and since you have like seventeen masterwork beds by now..."
"BERSERK!!"

This is a fox skull helmet. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It menaces with spikes of fox bone and is encircled with bands of fox leather. This item is haunted by the ghost of Alfador Angrorung the fox.

I don't know of anything that can downgrade the actual craft quality of an item.  Does somebody have a save right before this happens?  It might be tricky to get one, but there have been mentions of some barrel oddities before, and a post-event save won't help.

Could this possibly be vermin related?  I know that vermin can by chance burrow into the barrels.  Will this degrade their quality?

Nope.  It doesn't even damage the container at this point.

Could it be related to bolts at range? Are you sure it's about barrels?

I'm having something like this, too, with my fort I'm still using 176.38a for. My legendary clothier has made a huge number of cloth bags for sand-filling purposes, and a handful of times a year (no more than three so far) it'll say a masterwork of his is lost. We're underground and surrounded by completely closed walls, and there's not even a stolen message, so apparently they're just spontaneously evaporating. He doesn't seem to mind, though. Probably because he's made so many at this point.

I've been thinking about this. Don't non-metal items become damaged when trampled on enough? I know I've seen bags become worn when left in high traffic corridors. Could the masterpieces become "lost" when even slightly damaged by traffic wear?

Trampling doesn't check for items or damage them, but just being wood/leather/cloth and sitting around for a long time is adequate.  This doesn't downgrade quality though, and X's around the object don't give them the masterpiece hit, even if they should in some cases.
