Migrants spawn on the River ... help?
« on: April 21, 2011, 08:16:52 am »

Title pretty much says it.  Problem comes in spring when the migrants spawn on the frozen river, then when they're halfway across, the darn thing melts and they all drown.  Usually I get 3-4 to spawn and start across before the melt (no more spawn after the melt), and I'd like to keep them alive till they cross.  I've been playing with traffic patterns, but it's still a problem.

Any ideas?

Build a bridge across the river and set it as a high traffic area and the river as a restricted traffic area

If adamantine is perfectly rigid, as shown by having 0 strain at fracture in the raw files, then the speed of sound in the metal approaches the speed of light. Adamantine musical instruments would produce ultrasonic vibrations, and cut off the fingers of the musician.

I've heard migrants do not follow traffic area orders

have you tried paving over the river at the location where the migrants spawn?

Do it dwarven man! Dam up the river and divert it around whence the migrants come. Or built a sky bridge across to the other side so they've got a better choice.

I've read the message three times and I can't figure out what the problem is.  It's like complaining that vermin keep getting caught in your traps.

"Oh no, another high master fish dissector drowned!  Whatever will I do?"

 ;D

Okay, maybe I'm a bit jaded after the last few migrant waves.

Who knows? Maybe there are high master metalsmiths there.

From memory (albeit trying to remember from a VERY long time ago :D) this is correct. So traffic orders won't do a damn thing. Instead, you have to manipulate the environment. Triaxx has already mentioned damming/diverting the river, but another option is to build a bridge across the river exactly where they spawn, and build a wall at the opposite edge of the bridge - as they can't get past the wall, they'll spawn on the bridge and walk off the bridge around the wall then continue on as normal. Build a wall along the edge of the river as far as is needed to stop the fools from stepping on it at all before it thaws.
Remember, dwarves aren't that bright so they need a helping hand every once in a while few seconds.

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

trenches or walls around the map, and a walled walkway across part of the river. basically make any risky part not pathable for them.

Channel out a tile next to the river every 5 tiles or so. They can swim well enough to get out.

Build a floor over the relevant parts of the river and a wall to either side (so they stay on it), then build some more wall to either side of the bridge on the far side of the river so that it's easier to use the bridge than to walk over the river.

Also, like someone else said, channel a few ramps so that people who fall into the river can get out.

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

This is probably the least time-intensive way. Buuuuuut. Think dwarven. Dam the upstream section of the river, wall it off, and then divert a magma flow into the rest of it.
