Slavery
« on: April 21, 2011, 08:13:23 am »

I have had enough of this. I have like 60 goblins caged up. I want to be able to DO something with them other than dropping them from 10 z levels in order to paint the floor. I want slavery to be added(and stop ranting about dwarves being against slavery. If you can make kitten biscuits then you can have slavery*) so that I can have 60 or so masons haulers just run arround and do my megaprojects.

*Also, there has to be a better way of getting rid of cats, other than putting them in a pasture and then flooding it.

I don't get cats, because I know that it's inevetable that they'll end up as dinner.

I have a cat in reality, though.

Perhaps your main government could have some kind of tolerance level for slavery. Going from the lowest, which would be waging war on you as soon as they hear of you owning slaves, or refusing to trade with you or send migrants, pushing you to set them free, letting your local government do as it pleases, or at the highest, outright supporting the idea.

Why did you post this thread?

You KNOW there are other topics that pop up once a week asking for this very same thing, and you KNOW what the answer always is, because you just said you don't care what it is.

Really? Because I haven't seen one yet.

I didn't know that there are other topics that pop up once a week. I don't know what the answer always is.

Kohaku is right. Go to the suggestions board and type "Slavery", "Slaves" or "Slave" into the search and you'll get umteen threads.

Well he/she is right. These posts come up frequently. Dwarven Ethics states [ETHIC:SLAVERY:PUNISH_CAPITAL]. So you are ignoring Toady, and demanding that the game add something because you want it. Well...

Prepare for some flaming. The same 3 people attack any thread that deals with getting rid of prisoners.

So players now don't have the right to mod the game? If they want to add slavery, then let them do it. Unless the OP wants toady to add slavery to the game.. that's another matter.

I would prefer it if you didn't generalize, I for one want an easy way to execute prisoners. Having to build a 50z level tall tower is Fun, but tedious. A simple, 'execute' command would please me. But Toady has specifically stated in the Raws that normal dwarves do not use slavery.

You can have that now. Dispose of the goblins and up your POP_CAP by 60.

Seriously, 60 pathing goblins aren't going to hit your FPS any better than 60 extra dwarves. So, until the game become a heap faster, I can't see much real benefit to adding this. Unless, you are way below your pop cap?

Using DFusion you can allow non-dwarves to do labours. Modding the raws the goblins can be tamed (maybe, but it definitely works with Ogres, and the goblin's mounts). They're sill hostile though (as slaves should be). You could pit them into a slave-work area, and have them produce their own food, and drop completed food/drink and farm crafts through a garbage chute. I'm not sure if they need to eat once Dfusion is running, i only started playing with it the other day.

So this is just a sample of what can be done now with trivial effort. And DFusion is a tiny download.

btw it is REALLY a big jump from eating a cat => human slavery. It's completely culture-relative (not that I'd personally eat a cat)

Consider how Hindu's view cows. When you go to McDonalds etc, you're EATING THEIR GOD. Which is probably more upsetting than someone eating just a pet species.

*Also, there has to be a better way of getting rid of cats, other than putting them in a pasture and then flooding it.
Pasture in an Atom-Smasher, it's quicker and cleaner. If cats really fuss you out, don't get them, or remove the [COMMON_DOMESTIC] tag so nobody brings cats.

Certainly there is the option for one to mod their own game.  Notice where this thread is, tho; The Suggestions Forum.  It's asking for Toady to change his mind of how races see slavery.

So yeah, it's second guessing already established content and doing so in a very upset way.

Dude.... if you want races to be cool with slavery then mod it yourself.

I imagine that we may get slavery one day when Toady starts developing Human Town mode, before then, I don't expect to see it in fortress mode, maybe in adventure mode though.

Some other races already take slaves (Goblins).  Just not Dwarves!
