Stella has this vital quality of being available in pubs as a draft lager. When you're a respectable husband, you go to a pub to get royally wasted, and they don't serve Tennent's there.

I think the nickname might've got attached to SA, and not any other, equally unexceptional draft beer, purely by the virtue of being one of the most popular ones. Maybe. Or it's just a meme that stuck for no good reason.
