Who else is itching for some development updates?
« on: April 20, 2011, 02:53:00 am »

It hasn't quite been a week yet, but after those last couple of city screenshot updates, I can't help but check the website a couple of times a day for further updates. Toady has been pretty quite this week though and its' been causing major DF withdrawl!

Yrs.  I am getting a bit twitchy about the new cities, myself.  I want to be able to see more, so I can make more educated suggestions on things that need to be addressed.

If DF is in Alpha, that means we are Alpha Testers, all.  And we need to be able to use unfinished product and find it's errors to do that effectively.

I'd like to see some actual in-game screens instead of maps, just to get more of a feel of cities.

I think maybe he is refraining himself from posting updates, as people are calling the new cities stupid and gamey.

I suspected this myself. Too many people jumping on his back too early, not just letting him do his own thing, I know it'd dampen my spirits and make me less keen to show off my progress if it were met with scrutiny rather than praise.

Then again, Toady could just be building up to a release before showing it off, or partying hard this week.

Still no update :( *goes off to fill his addiction with a substitute of some DF'ing*

What, he's been getting flak for his new cities?

The maps look AWESOME, with rivers and patios and whatnot.

Other than that: i think he's usually taking a week off at the end of months, and didnt do that last month?
And its not uncommon to have a few weeks without new talk in any case. He's making a game more than an entertaining blog.

You know, everything I say isn't the end of the world or as harmful as you'd like to believe it is.

There is such a thing as constructive criticism.

We have a bug tracker specifically so that people can point out the flaws in the game, and fix them.

When I do work on something, you can be sure the first thing I do is put it up and ask people to critique anything they can find they think is wrong with it.

It works much better than this sort of passive-aggressive nonsense where I find these random complaints in random other threads because they aren't mature enough to bring their complaints up in someone's face, so they do it behind their backs.

Toady wouldn't have been making this game for this long if he wasn't prepared to deal with someone saying, "You know, I don't think this looks quite right, and for that matter, I actually am going to take the time to back this statement up with some proof."

Toady isn't a child. He's not going to hold back an update because someone said something that hurt his feelings. The update will be released when it's done, not on Toady's whim.

Still can't wait, though...

Yeah, I suspect it might put a damper on his eagerness to post updates, if the most visible reaction to updates is people sperging out over a few pixels and demanding that every unimplemented feature (in an explicitly WIP screenshot, no less) be acknowledged as a flaw/bug.

The laughably naive implementation of Bridge Economic Theory will pale in comparison to the actual bugs in the next release, I guarantee everyone.

Being as Toady is trying to build a complex and realistic world, I am sure he would want to know about any flaws as soon as possible.

No good programmer has their feelings hurt if someone sees a small problem in an otherwise great step forward and suggests ways to correct it, especially early on, when it is still early enough to plan out how to fix it.  The earlier a bug is caught, the less things that are dependent upon the functions that are in that code, the easier it is to correct the problems.

It is only a bad programmer who responds to criticism by refusing to admit mistakes or allowing others to see those mistakes, rather than trying to find and correct them.

I have confidence that Toady is not a bad programmer.  Someone who manages a bug tracker, especially, should know about this.

Yeah but a one-paragraph "maybe the bridge should actually have a reason to be there" is better than a several-pages dissertation on economics and war vis a vis bridges in medieval europe...

This. While complexity is one of DF's main characteristics, getting bogged down on an argument that will ultimately bring very little to the game is not exactly a display of knowledge on what an alpha game's development should adress. Actual bugs that the new version will bring are much more important.

Going crazy on discussions over the economic aspect of bridges and its effects on society is pretty alright, but expecting any of it to be applied to a game that has no real working economy yet is a bit silly.
