Honey Bees: Threat or Menace?
« on: April 19, 2011, 08:50:23 pm »

Expedition Leader Thon, why are we channeling through the roof of the Barracks?

So we can put the Beehives in there, dimwit!

Wait, What?

Let the fighters have a taste of pain - it'll toughen 'em up for when the real threats show up!

...Okay.  Whatever you say, sir.

Flash forward five years in this fort (under the Advanced mod - but I'm pretty sure it doesn't alter the bees), with the beehives in the middle of the barracks, partly for lulz, partly as an experiment in exercising the dwarves' fortitude.

Sure, the dwarves are tough.  No proof the bees had a hand in it, but it's just funny to think of the dwarves sparring with beehives as a course hazard.

Except...

I now have twelve dwarves with damage to sensory or motor nerves.  I thought that it was just from battle, although some of them show a history of no injuries.

The incident that got me thinking that there might be a connection turned out to be a red herring.  I started getting spam from the Champion, declaring him too injured to store owned items, right after a beesting message that turned out to have been a different dwarf with a similar name.

It may be nothing...probably is.  But anyone else care to try it out, for science?

I can almost guarantee you that the bees had nothing to do with that.  Injuries can happen as a matter of course in sparring, and if the militia has ever seen any actions, it's almost guaranteed they will get scarred.

Ive had units spar for years, never see combat and never get injuries.

Beestings don't do much in small amounts, but if you're forcing your men to get stung 1000s of times, then that's probably going to suck. I mean, imagine if YOU got stung 1000 times...  :o

Straight from the raws on the wiki. Not all that familiar with syndrome code, so I can't say how deadly this is. Doesn't look like it would cause nerve damage, though.

Except for the whole swelling part. Enough stings might cause enough swelling to maim you, maybe even cause nerve damage. Who knows, maybe it can even kill you.

Nervous tissue is tagged in the raws as VASCULAR. So that syndrome could cause very minor nerve damage, if the attack that injects it penetrated deep enough through the outer tissue layers to hit a nerve. Seems unlikely though, especially if your dwarfs were wearing clothes...
