Warrior Nap Time
« on: April 19, 2011, 04:18:07 pm »

Through standard dwarven drink timing, I was left with a legendary hammerdwarf and legendary axedwarf guarding my fortress against three simultaneous siege groups. One group came from the east, my hammerdwarf leaving the fort's entrance to destroy it; the axedwarf was responsible for the other two groups.

The axedwarf performed exceptionally, slaying about a dozen enemies in a few seconds. He named his weapon, and proceeded to sleep. In the middle of battle. He was quickly swarmed and killed.

I realize this was probably due to exhaustion, but does this happen often? Are there ways to prevent it?

Also, first post on the forums.

Did he have a bed?

If there is no bed dwarves will sleep the instant they get tired no matter where they are.

If there is a bed they will try to head towards a bed to sleep, but if they are interrupted by something, such as a goblin, they will continue to interact with the goblin. If its a soldier they will attack the goblin. If its a civilian they will flee from the goblin.

It could be exhaustion if it was a long battle, but its really rare for a legendary axedwarf to not be totally inexhaustible.

Blocking or dodging a huge number of incoming attacks will quickly tire out any dwarf. Generally a legendary axedwarf will cause so much damage so fast that he won't be surrounded like this, but if he's too busy defending he won't be able to attack. It seems like a creature can only perform a finite number of actions per time period. If they're using all of their actions for defense they won't be able to get a hit off in return.

I may have closed my gates, fearful of overrun; this would explain. Thanks for the information!

This brings up a wonderful point that's been bothering me for some time with the military. In the real world military, they train squadmates all on the same schedule. They eat, sleep, poop, and fight on the same schedule--and for the obvious reason that they will need to all be active in a skirmish at the same time if they want to be even remotely effective.

Why don't we have this in the game?

You can sort of do this with station commands. I've found that dwarves will wait longer to drink, eat, and sleep if you station them somewhere. This will allow the less hungry dwarves to catch up with the more hungry ones, and then you stop the station order and they all run off to eat, drink, and sleep at the same time.

Yes, I had noticed the stationing priorities as well, which was part of why I was confused. None of my military dwarves had left their duties for anything short of a necessary drink before, especially with enemies around. This rather sudden decision to sleep (or collapse) seemed odd.

One of my penta-legendary militia got caught sleeping just outside the trap corridor by two trolls during a siege. They wrestled him for a good three or four minutes before I decided to send the rest of his buddies out.

He had no injuries whatsoever but was in terrible pain while he was asleep getting wrestled.
