Make creatures self-fertilising?
« on: April 19, 2011, 03:44:34 pm »

If you add the [MALE] and [FEMALE] tags to one creature/caste, will it fertilize itself/its eggs or what?

[geekytrivia](Don't laugh; in addition to creatures that reproduce by mitosis, there are creatures who reproduce by fission, budding, and even some reptiles and other creatures who can lay fertilized eggs without a male being present-at least one species of lizard is composed entirely of females, reproducing asexually in this manner. So while they aren't male and female, they do reproduce without another creature's presence. This would be a sensible reproduction strategy for sea serpents, cave dragons, and other rare beasties.)[/geekytrivia]

If a civ is composed of such creatures, how does marriage and birth work? Also, are creatures that are both male and female reffered to as he, she, or it?

Pretty sure it just takes the first tag that's listed. No Asexual creatures. Or whatever the word is.

Asexuality is the complete lack of sexual incentive and feelings. The word you're looking for is hermaphrodite.

If you remove all references to gender for the creature and add egg laying in the raws, does the creature lay fertile eggs, lay infertile eggs, or no eggs?

Infertile eggs.  Egg-laying isn't dependent on gender at all - you can give males the egg-laying tag and have them lay eggs - but the only ones that will hatch are those laid by a female, when there's a male nearby, and which are then sat on by the female in the next box till they hatch.

Parthenogenesis.

Hermaphrodites are creatures with male and female parts which still sexually reproduce. For example, most plants, which pollinate other plants (the male act) and bear fruit (the female act) so that they perform both male and female sexual functions, but typically not with themselves.

Parthenogenesis is the act of a female whose eggs fertilize themselves.  Parthenogenesis is a form of asexual reproduction, including that species of lizard which are completely female, fertilizing their own eggs without the need for males in their species whatsoever.

(It would also explain harpies.)

This is, however, not currently a part of the game, and is not moddable in any way.  It has been suggested, however.  You can comment on that thread about how much you would want to see it.
