Cavern access?
« on: April 19, 2011, 05:57:40 am »

Short of building a giant staircase into the abyss in Fortress Mode yourself and then abandoning the fort to return to its remnants...

What is the easiest/most reliable way to get access to a cavern (bigger the better!) in adventure mode? Fighting grizzly bears is snoresville. I want excitement.

Toggle "Make Caverns Visible" on the advanced world generation thingy.  You'll be able to see cave entrances on the minimap now and enter them that way... but good luck finding your way out of them once you do...

Caverns = Waste of time.

The first one I got into was huge and hard to navigate, the only real creature I saw was a pond grabber who was quickly kicked. I didnt see any kind of epic monsters that tried to eat my insides, e.g. GCS. But then again, it is something new in comparison to the endless forests. As Gloopy said, if you want caverns then toggle the visibility option, you'll have to gen a new world though, or you could get lucky and find a random cave as I did. :P

I did it.
I found my way out of that god damned cavern with its endless passages and tunnels.
Now, to you this may not be a big deal, but it is to me.
I have spent WEEKS of playing this same character on and off trying to find my way out of this hellish maze.
And now I finally did it.
Forrests, deserts, mountains, freedom.
Now to find something to unleash all this pent up frustration and rage upon.

Yeah the one time I got into the caverns (found a cave on the beach purely by accident while I was en route to my umpteenth bandit camp) the most combat action I got was clearing out the troglodytes who lived in the passageway connecting the cavern system to the surface cave. They either need to drastically ramp up the amount of wildlife down there (which might make things a little too fun for new players in Fortress Mode), come up with some random ambush generators, or start having humanoids give underground quests.

I think there needs to be more camps of animal-people down there. Also, layer one sucks, but layer three has trolls and ogres raping you all over the place.

One person (I don't remember, you can use the search to find the thread) went to Hell throgh the longest route ever: cave->caverns->funbox->hell.

Right now it's quite boring. I think once we get more stuff to do in adv. mode (and actual dehydration/hunger back) it will be a much funnier experience.

Wouldn't it be nice if the caverns were a bit more complex, or maybe just variable, across horizontal distances?  Different biomes than just water or not watery.  Relative height and drainage and all the stuff the surface has, and all the parameters varying in such a way that different environments arose.

Then you could have an underground map, and fast travel down there.  If it were treated as just another "layer" of the world, it could be very awesome.

Imagine underground civs building cities or towers in the caverns (drow, anyone?).

Oh, theres lots that could be done with the underworld.  Right now, it's just boring.

I like fortresses because they are still underground.

It's still much better than original cave rivers and chasms.

It looks like people can be tired of anything :P. When the caverns appeared for the first time, the whole forum was screaming "wee caverns how awesome you are" :/.

True, I suppose so.

I still think that there should be legitimate sites down in the caverns, tho.

Imagine the cities that we're seeing previews of on the dev log... underground.... with walls surrounding them, and a towering keep in the center.

I think we won't get them until we get aboveground cities, towers, forest retreats and mountain halls back. You know, Toady works on that right now :).

In world gen there are options you can change to make the caverns giant holes in the ground, right now i'm building a giant hollow stair case into one in dwarf mode, then gonna adventure around the ruins. Its not that big yet, more of a design attempt really.

The first time I Adventured with .31, I wandered down into the caverns in several spots (but never far enough to get lost).  The last time I Adventured and tried that, I reached a down-ramp that was disconnected from the next down-ramp by another Z-level.  Not wanting to jump down and have to find another, more viable, exit, I decided to stick to the surface from then on.

(But, then, that was the problem with 40d chasms, jumping into the unknown and no surety of getting out again, even if you did survive.)

So false. Try wandering around down there for two dwarftime days. When I was on my little quest to find a cave with a reachable exit after being knocked down there, I killed about 150-200 enemies, mostly trogs and crundles, with lots of pond grabbers and a good mix of harder foes.
