TAXES
« on: April 18, 2011, 06:34:00 pm »

Yeh, normally I am ok paying taxes. Mostly because I already paid them all year and I expect to get a little money back.

But this year I am missing one of my W-2s and I have to file an extension. I have searched and searched and searched and I can not find the last paystub from that job anywhere. I knew this was a problem months ago, and called up my ex employer and asked them to send me a copy of my w-2. But it turns out that because I don't check my email, they don't have my current address and either sent it to the wrong address or never sent it and now it is too late.

The IRS has all the information I need to finish filing, all I need is my income for that job and my taxes paid for that job. But they won't give it to me, because they are adversarial asses.

Give your ex-employer the right address and have him send you a copy again.  Are you worried about not having the original?  Thats not a big deal AFAIK.

Did, still don't have it. I still don't have the actual information to file either.

edit: that includes the information I need to file an extension, but I am going to try anyway with an estimate.

Well, no, because if the IRS just told you the numbers that you're supposed to tell them, you could be hiding almost any kind of income.  You need to report what they already know, so that they know everything matches up.

It is silly just how hard it is to track down some of this critical paperwork, nevermind that nobody really explains to you exactly what all papers and activity you're responsible for.  The first year I did my own taxes, I would up paying about $200 in problem fees, not least because the post office apparently sat on my extension for two days.

But then, you come back to the problem that it's never really anybody's fault but your own, because you had three and a half months to figure it out.

Anyway, I'd look at your last paystub of the year.  You have old paystubs right?

No. I do not have pay stubs. My checks were all auto deposited and my paystubs were only accessible electronically. Now that I am no longer an employee there, I can not access the system where I can view my paystubs.

and note: I figured this out at least 2 months ago when I requested a new W-2 from that employer, but I didn't get it.

You are not in a situation that is unique.  There have been long standing practices for dealing with this.  Look at the second link.
