Another rendition of Darkness, Darkness.
A go-to song which, despite the name, provides comfort.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giOP1o7Mre4

I think I prefer the defiant, energetic rendition.  Where the singer rails against the dying of the light.  Goals.

But I'm usually looking for a different song when I find this one.  I'm looking to remember a bit of Filk, because of course I am.  Its name confuses the algorithm.  And it's dark, very dark.  Less direct, more story.

So I gave this another listen (I've heard it before),
and that got me poking through some of Corb Lund's other songs--
--until I stumbled on Bible on the Dash, which I hadn't heard before--
--and that got me laughing like a maniac.

I thank you. :))

Ahaha, wow, hadn't heard that one before either, brilliant.

Hey little piss baby

It's so loud and offensive and horrible, but every bit of it has a hook that gets you and doesn't let go. Then you find yourself singing it out of tune on a regular basis. 100 gecs is quickly becoming one of those finds that I'll burn out on in a month and then file away for that eventual mood of being angry and full of frustrated energy.

I've been subtly sharing filk with my brother and his friends past couple weeks, and they accept it fine as background music.  Perhaps the stories catch someone's notice.
There's always so much to choose from.  Wisdom, in a rhyme, passed down for any situation.  But how do you make it stand out in this marketplace of attention?

New Unlucky Morpheus Song

Liked this comment:
Quote
I love how they make these ultra dramatic and heavy songs but when you listen to the lyrics you realise they're just a bunch of nerds singing about their favourite video games

It's about Final Fantasy 8, apparently. So they're a grown up band now and not singing about Touhous, see?

There's not much to understand, it's just folk music, but spelt different as an in-joke in the sci-fi convention crowd because of a typo someone did, about "filk" music in the sci-fi subculture. So as an in-joke they started writing filk instead of folk.

So in cons they have an open mic night, and whatever people do for those is by definition "filk".

Basically.  I'm hesitant to try to define it.
For me it's folk music, but usually a subgenre of futurism.  It's not always sci-fi, but in my estimation it always speaks about a future.

It's folk because it's people singing about current situations through metaphor.  It's Filk because it's fantastic.

Ohhhhh. So, folk music about nerd shit, or at least by nerds. That wasn't so hard, was it?!
Thanks for finally clearing that up, guys. I was almost going to try to contribute by throwing out some folk recommendations, but the folk I listens to tends to be more about... uhhh, doing drugs, maintaining a nice garden, being wracked with loneliness and dying alone in a ditch. The lyrical themes are not so much "fantastic" as "craptastic".

Speaking of craptastic themes, this old thing popped into my head just before. Or, specifically, I was thinking about how huge of an effort it is to be bothered maintaining dental hygiene whilst hideously depressed, considered the merits of just lying around with one's teeth rotting out, and my brain made the leap from that to "geek stink breath".
...Although, I don't think I actually remembered the title, not consciously at least. I just searched the first three, classic lines of the lyrics in YT.
