Yeah the SNES's sound chip was capable of true stereo... though most of the older SNES games didn't utilise it.

Having programmed the SNES's sound chip a bit, you needed a really good synthesizer program to really make use of all its features. Each developer had to code their own sound engine (or buy rights to use one) as it came with none. Making it sophisticated was not a high priority for most small developers.

Hackers have brought to its knees nowadays of course, but porting songs from one game to another is still mostly impossible without rewriting the song since even games made by the same developer often had slight differences in their sound engines.

It's fun stuff.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Yeah, because aside from the snes songs being hard to code in due to differences in the engine, there's also that matter with making and programming instruments. Therefore, no two songs from different companies are ever the same (barring the buy a preexisting sound program and soundbank thing).

I mean, just compare songs from FFVI (3) and Kirby's Dreamland 3

I remember FFVI's battle theme's very beginning very swiftly panned between speakers at the start: the 'FWWITTH' before entering the baseline.

First off some Modest Mouse simply because they are freaking awesome :D

Then some Sigur Ros, again, amazing stuff and all that.

And some rambling about why I like post/stuff so much, it's a very raw kind of music that is packed with emotions (atleast I think it is XD ) and is just different every time I hear the same piece, plus the experimental nature of the genre gives some really unique sounding stuff which is always a good thing in todays world of samey pop music.

i simply adore this author, he can really make good game based music.

my top three list for him:
1. the new black gold (Deus ex: human revolution)
2. Redemption Blues (Red dead redemption)
3. Little sister (Bioshock) (sung from the perspective of a big daddy)

but all of his stuff is great. i also suggest you listen to: The Grind, The dead don't shuffle, Normandy and Sweet L.A. he has a wide range of styles, so i think you'll find something for everyone in there.

I'm so glad I found this thread. I love music, and I might to go through the entire thread at some point. Either way here are some of the songs I can think of off the top of my head:

Hungry Ghosts (Dark Ambient, disbanded) - Three Sisters
Tango with Lions (Lounge?) - In a Bar
Asobi Seksu (Shoegaze pop) - Walk on the Moon
Röyksopp (Trip-Hop) - What Else is There?
Fever Ray (Trip-Hop) - Mercy Street (cover)
Danger (French Electonic) - 3h16 (All his songs are times)
Boys Noize (Electronic) - Oh! (Danger Remix)
SebastiAn (French Electronic) - Tetra

It goes from downbeat to upbeat.

EDIT: I'll only post one or two at once next time. I just have way too much music that I love right now.
