Led Luredknives' Diary
16th Opal, 552

Dear Diary,

All these dead things are WAY worse than I thought they'd be!  Sure, killing is fun, but then what happens to the rest?  They just stick around and smell yucky!  It's no fun at all!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Why didn't Litast ever mention that part!?

I hate this place sometimes, Diary.

Journal of Ducim Helmeddawn, Broker
2nd Obsidian

I have suggested Led take up one of our newly constructed picks, hoping that her new job as a miner will give her some time to work out her aggression, and keep her out of my way as I try to prevent any more senseless deaths.  I also promised to see to the construction of the great tomb she is so concerned about... though I would really like to provide some decent bedrooms first.

I have begun the work of engraving the slabs.  There are a lot of them.  However, I am pleased to report that we have finally laid Ducim the beekeeper to rest. Maybe now the others will stop making warding gestures whenever they remember I share his name...

I understand deep below us a careful process of excavation and construction of bridges spanning the chasm is in progress, giving us access to flux stone, and sometime soon, better ores and gems.  This is a very exciting time.  Food is plentiful, incredibly so - it is hard to believe it was ever a problem.  I have to admit, the original founders may not have lived to see their vision come to fruition, but the end result is indeed impressive.  We will be set for some time to come.

I've had to ask Herocks to take over some menial tasks such as cooking, since we're so short on important labors, and so cluttered with ingredients right now.  House seems to do his own thing, but occassionally takes the time to do some wood crafting and fishing, and seems to be awfully good at both, so we pretty much let him be.  As for Bob, I stopped him in the hall the other day and chatted.  As much as we're grateful for his skills in growing and brewing, both much needed, I asked him to spend some time at the wood furnace replenishing our supplies of charcoal.  We'll need it to keep smelting zinc.

((I hope that I'll have a more interesting update soon.  Things are pretty much trudging gradually along, now.  Oiledgod has become more stable than I have seen it ever.  I apologize for the big gaps between updates but there's just not a lot to report - a lot of hauling, and very slow digging.  Once I get the dwarves dug in to their new quarters perhaps I can embark on some more interesting project.))

Diary Of House(Gregory)

I've heard the others talking..... Saying its odd that i took "my" old room, that the smell could kill a carp, that I've been acting strangely, that none sees me for days before walking out to get food, Ive got to get to act more normally so they dont become TO suspisucs. Also Im going to keep a log again of what is going on, It may help the research.

22nd sandstone

The dwarves(we) are building a divice to destroy the cursed ones in an apemt to rid us of them, there moaning inside the pen is enough to drive us loppy already(well.... a bit more loopy) so I hope they finish it soon.

25th Sandstone'

Oh the divice is a dwarven atom smasher, this divice should kill them and obliterate there bodies so there wont be and maisma to worry about, I do hope they hurry , I dont want them liveing any longer then they need to be.

9th opal

It is done, the 5 evil one are gone, along with any trace of there bodies, our miner,Risen did the holy honor, he shall be a saint in my eyes.

12th opal

We have come apon a large cavern in the mist of mineing to find ores to smelt, i am not sure if this is a good thing or if some horrors lye(ha) in wait.

13 obsidian

We have begun excivation of the cavern, my only hope is that the cavern it self is safe(for a cavern) and holds nothing that would aid the evil ones in there, well I am not sure WHAT there up to at the moment, but I am trying to read up on some old folklore in a text that I bough from the recent caravan.

14th I over heard our current broker say that we have pleanty of food, that it was hard to belive it was ever a problem, and that even though the orgianal founders will never see there dream come true, we are indeed set fo a time.

How wrong he is....

Journal of Ducim Helmeddawn, Broker
9th Slate, 553

It has been nearly a year since my last update to this journal.  The fortress has been thriving, and we have all been very busy, the few of us struggling to keep up as our various industries begin to kick into gear, and as many of us struggle to learn new trades to replace those who have fallen by the wayside.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I report, with some frustration, that the Great Tomb is still not quite finished, despite fully 2 seasons spent working on it.  Only a few engravings remain, and then the final steps can be taken, but the amount of stone clutter makes it complicated. But throughout the fortress, the mood is more hopeful than it was when I arrived.  Of course, today's events make me think that is partly because the winter spared us the harshest reality of our situation here, and now that it is a new year:

More migrants have arrived, and Led has been true to form, directing them straight to the Migrant Masher / Detention center.  The silhouette of that looming slab on the horizon gives me the chills every time I see it, but at least it serves as a good landmark when trying to find one's way to the settlement.  She sent me to see them settled, giving me a chance to sneak a few out before she could do the fell deed.  She has a habit of judging ALL corrupt, these days.

I have continued my research into the means by which the founder, Litast, learned to identify the tainted ones, and to differentiate them from their mind-slaves.  Led can't seem to even tell a normal dwarf fleeing to us for their life from the demons. I have heard the new doctor, House, muttering about these matters.  Perhaps his mysterious 'research' can shed some light.  Perhaps I will ask him, later.  In the meantime I have little choice but to save those I can, and use my intuition.

I managed to extract Alath "Urnyor" Vucarokang, a weaver with some much-needed competence in suturing as well, Kogan "Daggerheat" Uristvush, a military Dwarf of enough skill to be an asset to our militia, and Geshud, a very proficient macedwarf, Avuz "Paintedhowls" Logemidor, a much more skilled brewer than we currently have on hand, and much welcomed in the memory of the Great Thirst, as well as a weaver named Zas "Knifedrinks", from the current batch of migrants. Along with Sodel Lovelyflag, the last survivor of our former militia, the two new martial dwarves now form a small squad calling themselves The Livid Planks.  I honestly don't understand these military callsigns.

After bringing the newcomers inside, the Planks almost immediately got their first peice of action, as a troglodyte from the caverns below had somehow found its way up into our dining hall, and injured a farmer. They made short work of the beast.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We scarce had time to eat a meal as the alarm was raised again.  This time, one of the bloody migrants was apparently possessed by some unknown force - he's barricaded himself in the forge, demanding more metal to work with.  Bloody hell...

And you might suppose it stopped there?  Oh no, far from it. Even as I was calling over Avuz to start smelting some of the ore to placate the mad-dwarf (we've been behind on smelting quotas anyhow - if we had a proper metals industry started, we could have steel by now!) The alarm goes up again.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A bloody gremlin sighted in the tunnels!  The Planks hop to action once more, but the Gremlin disappeared somewhere.  No doubt it will spring again once we least expect it. More troublingly, however, Sodel reports sighting a Troll in the caverns below... just what manner of trouble has Led's mining stirred up?

10th Slate, 553

This morning the hammer of Led fell on another 11 poor souls.  May the gods have mercy on them and us.  I have begun carving a small alcove to the side of the Great Tomb of the founders for the other burials, including that of the many poor 'tainted' migrants who have come to us.  Led was FURIOUS at the idea, but after some persuading (and, I believe, some small risk of my own neck) I have convinced her that it was not in fact their fault for becoming possessed, and does not constitute a traitorous act.  Unsurprisingly, it would seem pity does not come naturally to her.

I hope we can soon satisfy the fellow locked in the forges... it could be most embarassing for me if I had to explain that he was allowed to get in there because the military was occupied elsewhere.

_____

Yep, back again :-D  And it seems like Oiledgod is starting to get eventful after a fairly slow turn.

I'll let you know what becomes of the possessed armorer soon.  As for your dwarves, House was right there when the Troglodyte was killed, and didn't seem too bothered.  He spends most of his time fishing, for lack of any patients - though I'm about to get him to work on the injured farmer, just as soon as we can get some kind of decent hospital.  Herocks must be frustrated about the forge-seizure, some other idiot using up the metal he's been waiting so long to get - he's stuck doing hauling until we can clear the crazy out.  Bob has been nigh-obsessively refilling our booze stocks.  We're over 200, now.  That must be a years's supply.

Haika - I've been holding off on that for now, just because the fort is currently pretty pathetic.  Maybe once I complete the tomb, and maybe a couple other small things so its not totally bloody embarrassing.  I've lost SO MANY miners that I'm still digging at a snail's pace, and what I have after 2 full years looks like a 1, maybe 2-season fort.  I'll make it a goal for the near future.

In a related note, I just finally set up a makeshift hospital, in one of the old dirt-wall bedrooms that has been abandoned.  So, House finally gets his patients:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Yeah, they all instantly stopped working and went to rest.  Overfilling the hospital.  Lets hope our overabundance of medical skills finally pays off.

Oh my.

No real update yet, but I have paused to play out exactly what happens tomorrow when I will be better rested, and possibly more able to salvage things.

Let's just say "Chekhov's Troll".

Not a real update, but lots of shiny pics now that I have Stonesense working again.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
First, the original rude shelter, and now main entrance, with depot nearby.  Not much to look at, eh?  Not at all.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Inside the original, dirt fort and some of our farms.  Note the proliferation of coffins.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Great Plug with secondary and tertiary plugs, and environs.  Also the infamous migrant masher - bridge down.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The rudimentary stone fort carved just below the aquifer level.  Just a small crafting area - you can see Led's (relatively) grand bedroom on the left.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Unfinished, but already looking suitably grand: the great tomb, in progress.  When finished I will knock the floors out of the upper layers for a 3-zlevel vast room complete with floor to ceiling engraved walls and pillars.  Note the two floor alcove to one side - for assorted other burials.  I might add a basement/catacomb layer later as well, if needed.

Now, down to the Cavern... really, the Chasm.  I mentioned a sheer drop?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Yeah, its like that.  For dozens of Z-levels with scarcely a ledge or bump.  The far side is even crazier.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
:o

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I carved a whole series of apartments into the marble near the vast chasm.  They'll make some nice housing - who wouldn't want an engraved marble apartment with a view of the yawning vast abyss?

That's all for now - at least my screenshots will be shinier in the future.

Great Armok.  That was truly epic.  Dwarves of Oiledgod - I salute you.

I mentioned a troll, and a tragic situation that I was delaying?

Read on.

Sodel Lovelyflag, Militia Commander
After-Action Report, 10th Felsite, 553

So I come to this dirtpile excuse for a hospital looking for someone to treat my broken toes, and take a seat in the corner to wait.  Apparently the doctor's too busy fishing or something for me, slacking elf-lover.  And what happens next?  In no time at all, some farmer, Godel Rackchances, comes in and SITS ON ME.  That's right, the bastard has two broken, sliced up legs somehow, and he just lurches in and collapses right on me.  He's been out ever since, and I keep drifting off myself, for the pain.

Finally, finally someone comes by, but it isn't the doctor.  No, it's my loyal soldiers, Macedwarves (or so they call themselves, no one's been able to make any bloody maces yet with that maddwarf clogging up the forge, so they're just punching things) who come in to tell me the bloody broker just sent them down into the caverns to rescue some dwarf in distress.  They help him in, this "Herocks" fellow, and he lies down in a bed, and they hand me this log and leave me there.

Bastards.  I hope they all catch a slow-moving, painful rot.

From what 'Herocks' has told me, the situation played out thus:  Stranded, deep in the caverns on routine business (i.e. fucking around) Herocks ran straight into a troll. As he was right at the edge of the great Chasm at the time, his terrified screams echoed all the way up to the main floor, and the soldiers, busy at their meal, were alerted and rushed to the rescue - but Herocks was far below and it would be some time before they reach him.  Meanwhile...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The troll corners Herocks near the edge of the chasm - there is nowhere to run, and a steep drop behind.  Herocks has little choice: he fights.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
At first, Herocks does quite well.  He has dabbled in the arts of combat, and is quite a bit more agile than one might expect, and was able to evade the trolls blows for some time, landing a few himself, even resorting to BITING its gnarled hand in a moment of desperation.  I must say, I am impressed by the tale.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But then the fight takes a turn for the worse.  The troll is simply too powerful, and after being repeatedly slammed into, Herocks loses his coordination for a moment, allowing the troll to seize him by the thumb, and gore him on his horns.  Herocks continues to struggle, but is forced back... back towards the great pit.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Herocks feels himself growing weak, breathing is difficult and he cannot get away.  He is mere inches from the edge when the troll lunges for him once more...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Herocks thinks fast.  He ducks swiftly to the side and levels a quick blow to the back of the troll's knee, upsetting its balance.  The troll sails past Herocks, bellowing in fury and confusion as it plunges fully three stories to the lower ledge below.  Herocks wastes no time fleeing, hobbling on an injured foot - but the troll is far worse off, and by the time it begins to give chase, the Macedwarf Kogan Daggerheat has passed Herocks and greets the trolls emergence up the narrow ramp with a fist to the skull, immediately knocking the beast back to the ground.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A fierce and prolonged bare-fisted pummeling to the head ensued, and after a time Geshud Ceilingcircled joined the fray.  The troll offered scarce resistance, too seriously injured by its fall to stand or even stay conscious long.  After what seemed like forever, the body of the monster moved no more.  Oiledgod is safe.

End Report. Now where the bloody hell is that medical dwarf?

------

Edit: I should mention - the ONLY thing I did, in this whole affair, was order the militia to come down and help.  From there, I just watched and recorded.  Every bit of this, from the excellent location of this epic battle, to the dodge, to the daring escape, was just as it happened.  The combat reports & images above represent practically 100% of the fight between Herocks and the troll.  I omitted the militiadwarves battle because it was just pages and pages of "macedwarf punches troll in head, bruising the muscle."

Log of Herocks Bellsmyths, Amorer:
15th Felsite-
Pain. Very much pain. I'm now well enough to write again, no thanks to the troll. It's been 2 Seasons since my last entry, and frankly things could be much worse. While ArKFallen's apparent death saddens me still, my own brush with death (and troll) has shed new light on my situation. Staring down a troll over 4 times my size has shown me the error of my ways. Happiness, Democracy, Caring, it's all elvish. If I want to live long and well, I'll have to adopt The Mad Queen of Knives' philosophy: Take what you want, kill what you don't.
I'll admit I've never heard Led say as such, but it's out there for all to see. She's mad as a hatter and psycho to boot, but she enjoys herself and gets what she wants. So what I need to do is attack that maddwarf after I'm all healed up and take my forge back. From now on I take nothing and dish out everything....
{Below is a crudely drawn picture of a dwarf laboring in a butchery}

Put him into the military until you need things done with metal that require skilled hands. I'd like him to be a part-time soldier in other words.

Journal of Ducim Helmeddawn, Broker

An elven caravan has arrived, and miraculously, they are here to trade, and not to take revenge.  Perhaps they are from a different civilization than the last ones?  In any case, I certainly won't mention it.

I told them all the elven goods lying around our depot are just because we're so very fond of elven crafts, and somehow didn't choke on the words even once.

With a little luck, maybe they have brought plenty of splints...
