Journal of Ducim Helmeddawn, Broker
13th Limestone, 552

An incident with the newly smelted bars being misplaced delayed us a great while, but the day is here, finally.  A day that, by all accounts, the settlement of Oiledgod has waited for for over a year now - striking stone.  The newly appointed miner sets off to the Great and Terrible Plug (actually, given its misdeeds, some have taken to calling it the "Shameless Plug") to strike the earth... We all watch with baited breath...

Awesome. XD

I'll snag that Brewer and grower. Name em 'Bob' I hope we have some food production getting started?

Melting a crossbow to make a pick won't work anymore, so luckily you made another one. melting only gives 1/10 of a bar anymore, so you'd need 10 crossbows of that type, all melted in the same smelter.

Now that we've struck stone, first priority should be a legendary dining hall to combat moods. After that, small stone bedrooms for the same reason.

And don't forget to check the labors(like herbalism on miners). Dwarf Therepist is amazing for this. If you don't have it, get the Lazy Newb Pack, it comes with that utility and makes life oh so much easier.

Either way, looks like you are getting through the rough spots. With a new migrant wave, the tantrum spiral should be winding down since they arn't friends with anybody yet. You might want to think of engraved memorials and large carved tombs for the originals once you're a little more safe.

oh, and don't forget traps! Get cages up asap. If goblins start arriving, moods will be the last of your troubles.

Sure thing, I'll name the grower... Haika, or something else?

Didn't know that about melting, what a pain.  I ended up deconstructing the forge, which I had been forced to make out of metal, (because I had no stone at that point) and reconstructing it with the one stack of stone blocks I got from the Dwarven Caravan.

I do use Dwarf Therapist (best. tool. ever.) but sometimes they still seem to do things they aren't enabled for... I also might be bad at keeping up with this.

I had been thinking that smoothing and engraving a bit was a priority, and at this point I think I can actually manage to give most of the existing dwarves fairly largeish rooms.  The dining hall is a good point though, best way to provide luxury for all of them at once.  Traps next, and then maybe I can think about the tombs.  I'll be sad if we can't properly memorialize those brave lil dorfs. *sniff*

Edit: I load the game, and - more fuckin migrants!  Hoo boy.

Journal of Ducim Helmeddawn, Broker
10th Sandstone, 552

Another wave of migrants arrived today.  They were a poor, desperate lot with little in the way of useful skills, as most have been.  There was one who, despite his 74 years of age, was nothing more than an adequate presser.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I understand the last overseers kept the fortress safe from those they deemed "demonically tainted" by aggressively rooting out the immigrants, but... I just cannot imagine doing so.  These poor souls.  I have tried to coax them into the fort, but they are so timid, they just linger at the perimeter, watching us.

14th Sandstone
It seems our young overseer Led does not have my soft heart and has ordered the newcomers to the old wooden open-air pen that was used by the original settlers.  Oh dear... I am worried how this may turn out.  At least she got them to come into our camp, finally.

20th Sandstone
It seems some of the migrants I managed to enter into the roster before Led could have her way have actually recovered from their strange possession - I believe these were a band of escaped mind-slaves, and not a threat to us.  Two that formerly called themselves "Sibrek" - which I have only recently come to learn is an ill-aspected name in these parts, are now demanding they be known by new names!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

((Also, ArK, one of the new migrants was a MUCH BETTER armorer than the original, so I sort of... ninja-switched them.  Herocks Bellsmyths, High Master armorer, professional marksdwarf, talented armor-user/dodger is now among us.  I figured you'd want your character to be the one who actually got to do cool stuff like make armor and fight.))
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Led has ordered the construction of a great drawbridge "door" in our migrant detention center, as soon as there is enough stone, and the poor migrants are lingering nearby by the fetid pools... I have a bad feeling about this, and have withdrawn deep into the new mines to ease my mind by practicing my long-neglected skills of masonry and engraving, by smoothing the floors.  I hope that at least some of them can be saved...

This endless rock-smoothing is surprisingly relaxing.  I feel... almost... buoyant.  My spirits are high and my mind is racing.  The steps of Risen nearby on the stone seem to echo and the world seems to slow around me... oh my.  Hahaha haa hah hah hahahahahahahahHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!  Yes!!!!  I must.... I must have a surface to work on!!!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dear Diary,
This place is sooo great.  Much better than working in the mud pits.  I'm so glad I stabbed that nasty overseer in the face and ran off with the others!   Otherwise Litast never would have found me, that sweet man.  He's dead now of course, but I'm not sad, because he's with Inod the Orderly, so that's good.  He's the one who told me about Inod, too.  The others don't all realize how important what Litast and the others were doing was, so I had to make myself overseer and order them to execute the tainted ones.  That's going really well so far!

I've been working in the wood shop lately, when I'm not helping the others kill nasty beasties.  I'm sick of boring beds and doors though... maybe I'll make a doll sometime soon.  I think a little smiling mahogany doll would be pretty!  Killing things is more fun of course.  I hope we're attacked again soon...

Now that broker, Ducim, has claimed a craftsdwarf's shop and is running back and forth cackling about something or other.  I think she's in a "mood".  I hope she gets through it okay.  She may be a fussy wuss most of the time, but I saw her tear the beating heart out of one of those goat-beasts with her bare hands, it was so cool.  Also she chased off those elves and took their things, so I think she's worth having around.

I'd hate to have to kill her.

-------------

Totally botched Ducim's gender before, sorry!  She is the current main PoV - though depending how this goes I might have to start using Led... actually that was fun and I'll probably use Led at least a little from now on :P  I do NOT understand how she has so many skills at age 54.  I'm thinking of that as like... 17 in dwarf years.  Anyone have any idea?

Update: ALSO screwed up Inod's name, again.  I suck with names.  Furthermore, it seems Ducim has begun her construction, with lots of spheralite!  Our first artifact!  I hope it doesn't suck.

Log of Herocks Bellsmyths, Amorer:
21st Sandstone-
Traveling was long and I quickly got so darn flustered that I almost strangled my compatriots. Thank the gods that we saw Oiledgod before then. I was glad to arrive but the smell was horrid. It was like something had crawled here to die which, judging by all the blood, seems to have happened alot. The moment I walked near a walled pen I got a forboding sense of deja-vu.
Before I even settled in I noticed a 'taken' dwarf gathering supplies which is quite alright, but the dwarf watching her gave me the chills. The look in her eyes reminds me of the psychopaths back home. I hope cousin Blockadephrases is alright in this asylum of a Fortress...

So Ducim is now a legendary engraver, and has already started engraving masterpiece images in our new rock home.

There are already some of Litast, Kadol, Zasit, and the requisite random historical world events, many of them involving elves travelling, apparently.

Then there's this:

I guess that guy really made an impression on them.  He is STILL haunting the fortress, after all.

Guildthroat *Shudder*...
He was probably the most evil dwarvish thing to ever set foot in Oiledgod. At least Sibrek was polite about it.

Log of Herocks Bellsmyths, Amorer:
22nd Sandstone-
Apparently the psychopathic looking dwarf is the Overseer, Led Luredknives. It seems I was just what she needed...someone to build a bridge to speed up dwarven assassination. It seems they previously used the Walled Pen to dehydrate the unwanted migrants to death, aren't I lucky. While preparing for the bridge I walked through the catacombs and spied a grave for one Blockadephrases. It seems he died a pointless death of thirst. Great, my best chance for a well established companion here goes down a pipe. Onward and Downward I guess.
{Edit}
24th Sandstone-
It seems after seeing me attempt to design a bridge, Led has decided that Ducim will do it. I don't really mind though. It'll give me time to look at Zocukstukos some more. It is insane to imagine that we once had a human king, though with if Oiledgod is anything to go by, he probably didn't last long at all.

Ducim, high off his recent accomplishment, has personally seen to the design of Led's "Migrant-masher" quite happily.  Still waiting for someone to actually construct it.  Suddenly we seem to have a dearth of Masons (??)

I'm researching the world history right now, so a brief pause in the action.  Nothing of note except we're slowly making progress on the stone halls, the floors are COVERED with Ducim's masterpieces, and I hope we actually have the metal for a second pick soon, because Risen is slow as death. Actually, given the speed of death in these parts, significantly slower.

I'm just grateful Ducim hasn't seen fit to cover the future dining hall with images of the Great Thirst.  Small miracles.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Here's the Legends section on Atir Orderclasp, the long ago human king-of-dwarves.  Looks like he only held that position very briefly.  I guess I'll need to do a lot more research to figure out what the hell went on here, but CLEARLY Ducim has constructed some kind of complex metaphor based on a sudden insight to a historical anomaly.  Yes.

Once I piece it together, I will post the whole treatise from Ducim's point of view :P

Oh wow, I have discovered the lost dwarven civilization!  A group called the Obscure Wheels (from Ensubdumat also) went and founded a fortress called "Machinescours" in the first year of the world history.  They almost immediately were plagued by a bunch of beasts, and all record of them was lost some 30 years later.  Less than a century ago, Ensubdumat started launching repeated expeditions to reclaim it, but apparently without success.

From this...  ahem, I mean.

Journal of Ducim Helmeddawn, Broker
Notes on the logs of Zasit Laborteeth, Royal Cartographer and historian, on the history of Zuza Slospu, the Domains of Omen

At the order of our new leader, Led, I have begun researching the work of Zasit, one of our founders, on the fate of an ancient group called the Obscure Wheels who founded Machinescours more than half a millenium ago.  Machinescours, it seems, was lost to history for some 450 years, when the rulers of The Basic Roughness apparently took a discrete interest in it again, and began sending expedition after expedition off into what we can only assume have been their deaths.  Or perhaps... just maybe... they have, like us, managed to eke out some shred of an existence in this nightmare land.

But my point stands - as anyone who has seen my beautiful and terrible creation, the Ominous Razors, understands - our rulers have already been corrupted by the forces that will doom them.  We must not make that same mistake.

((there's a ton of world history, and while its fascinating, I'd rather keep playing.  I'll return to it later if it becomes relevant/there's interest.  Now - back to oiledgod!))

Update: Furthermore it seems the nearby goblin civilization, The Disloyalty of Craters, is led by demons of some kind and has been attacking and crushing nearby civilizations for roughly the entire world history.  Fortunately it's mostly been ransacking the elven civ "The Fatal Bean" lately.

IT WORKED! MY PLEA TO THE GODS HAS WORKED! I RETURN! Now I can retrun to my research.

Ive found my old room in the same state I had left it, I am told I can stay here and no one is of the wiser that it is me. Thogh I do feel sorry for the poor fool I have taken over, I can continue my work.

I've found my old notes, sadly the corpse of the fiend is gone, to parts unknown, but I was done with it.

(the notes end here, the writeing oddly returs to that of Gregory's)

But as time moved on and the Humans built there cities, the elves built there retreats, and the dwarves, well

they started to dig. At first they dug out only what they needed to survive and make goods, to make there

great cities. But then they started to become greedy, delving deeper and deeper into the earth to find there riches, untill one fell day they came apoun the holy ore. The fortress's name shall live in infamy Machinescours.

Soon realizeing the powers that it contained, they mined it at an alarming rate going even deeper untill they could only dig through the veins of Adamantine itself. For a time the fortress prospered, the Great ore allowing them to fordge great wealth and weaponds, becomeing unstopable. Then came the fell year, the year 30, when all traces and any infromation that was sent from this place was stopped.

This was the year that they breached the caveren, and from it came them, the evil ones, the demons. The armies of the fortress fought bravely but it was in vain, for the evil was endless, and the frotress fell.

Journal of Ducim Helmeddawn, Broker
8th Opal, 552

It is good to finally return to my journal.  So much has happened of late that I have had little time for writing.  At Led's urging I did construct her "Migrant-Masher" - wicked as it is, it was not my idea, and I won't be pulling the lever, so who could blame me?  I'm just following orders, after all.

Meanwhile, I've been engraving our new dining room day and night, lots of history, tributes to our founders... Led specifically commissioned a memorial of Litast I am calling "The Immortal Earth" and also one engraving commemorating his defeat of the wicked Sibrek using collapsing ceiling, which I dubbed "The Frothy Tactic".  I feel in my art I have found my true calling.

Here are some of my favorite works to date:
The Long Tumors - depicting the labor of dwarves
The Tangled Meanness - remembering Gregory's tenure as chief medical dwarf
The Smuts-Cake of Trusses - depicting the return of Sibrek from the grave as an evil spirit
The Famine of Soils - an image of mountains.  It expresses our longing for both booze and stone, when we were confined to the world of soil
The Counsellors of Indignation - an image of the original founders founding oiledgod. By many accounts they were a cantankerous bunch.  Don't tell Led I said it.
The Entrancing Escort - Commemorating the appointment of Adil Merchantrein to the position of militia commander.  I like to imagine she was a great beauty, though I never met her.
The Alchemies of God, & -- both depict Erib the Mountainous Rocks laughing at us for our failure to strike stone.
The Playful Strangers - depicts Haika laboring, to tell the story of assorted dwarves coming together to found Oiledgod...
"The Sick Sucker" - also about our foundation, but... okay I don't tell anyone that title but myself.
There are too many.  I would go on.  ((Seriously, more than half of the names of these are kind of hilarious, and this is all in a single small stretch of hall so far))

When the merchants arrived I traded some of our plentiful extra clothing and various wooden crafts for more booze (given the history of this place, I am fearful of running out) plenty of meat and fish, as we have been mostly eating plants, and various raw materials, especially good metal.  Despite reaching the rock, we are still only finding Spheralite, and Zinc really isn't going to cut it for tools.  Though I understand someone ordered some zinc sarcophagi for our founders to be properly entombed.

Mercifully, Led seems to be waiting for the merchants to leave to execute the prisoners.  I have managed to sneak two of them away - those I am most confident are not corrupted.  Now only five will be done in.

Risen, our miner, was quite eager to pull the lever himself, when the time came.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh my.  Not a trace...

Risen also achieved one other impressive accomplishment today, which prompted me to write this entry in the first place:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Apparently it wasn't even far off.  It drops sheer away as far as we can see, straight down with hardly a place to stand.  We're honestly not sure what to make of it.  Gems glisten at some places, and a bit of marble, but there's still little sign of useful ores.  I suppose we keep digging downward, and perhaps carve stairs and some quarters out of those sheer walls.

_______

The cavern is seriously about a 50 z-level sheer drop.  It's more of a pit than anything.  And I hit it only about 4 z levels below where I already was, very close to its uppermost edge.

We have a second miner now, but we really need more, because the move is going at a snail's pace.  I've managed to move the dining room and a few shops, but the stockpiles and bedrooms are still up in the soil.  Winter is upon us, and I'd really like to have a complete fort dug in the rock by spring.
