Inod have mercy.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They have returned.

It seems even the grave cannot hold these fiends.

Meanwhile my fellows dwarves have worked all winter long on Project: Plug it Up.  As soon as we reach the stone, I will order tombs built.  I have a theory that if we encase the demons mortal link to this world in thick rock, we might yet escape their torments.

I only hope they do not drive my companions mad before that happens.

Edit: Yes, that would be Sibrek, the original fiend, and 'Guildthroat'.  I did not plan this. I couldn't have.  It's far too perfect.

Oh dear lord.  We still have not completed the great plug, and another wave of migrants show up.  Did I say wave?

I meant horde.  This more than doubles the size of the fortress.

I dispatch the military to maintain order, and set up another open-air shelter.  It will take a great deal of time to screen all of them... besides, given what I have seen before, these creatures may only be vulnerable to wood.

Anyone seeking a dorfing - Now's the time to speak.  Despite something like 19 migrants, very few of them have anything resembling useful skills.

Excerpt from the Memoirs of ArKFallen Blockadephrases:
It was gruesome, the task Listat charged Gregory, so I didn't mind too terribly much to not be allowed to touch the bodies but I watched every moment of it. I'll never forget the fell smell that came from Guildthroat's body on the first incision. I'd never felt such an outstanding urge to vomit out my lungs. I could only imagine the discipline it took House to work on him and not wretch, discipline I'd have to match to surpass him. After the first incision was made, House propped it open using twigs he'd brought earlier (I recall him mentioning losing his supplies on his way here) and began the examination of the guts in earnest. He widened the rip and studied the remains with a fervor I'd only seen scholars match. After some twenty odd minutes he began looking around for something to protect his hands with. Being helpful I tossed the socks of the diseased to him, where he caught them without acknowledging me.
He slipped his hands in, sliced open the guts, and began wading through perhaps looking for any food they may have eaten. He kept at the autopsy well into the night until he took a break to record his findings. After he didn't move from the desk for a while I moved closer to see he was sleeping. I then put a blanket over him and the chair, and creeped out of the room.
During my midnight stroll I could have sworn I'd heard wailing, though I discounted it. I'd wouldn't learn of the unholy business surrounding that till morn the next day...

Journal of Litast Pleatsteel, Expedition Leader
26 Slate, 552

A most shocking matter has come to my attention.

(apparently I forgot to get a screenshot, sorry)

It seems the royal cartographer has begun an affair with my servingdwarf.  This seems strange and unnatural to me, that one of his station should pursue one so lowly, but I suppose we are freed of so many of the strictures of tradition out here.  It gives me hope, in a way, hope that we may yet succeed in building a new society, a new world, in this waste.

2nd Felsite

Despite my best efforts to contain the encroaching horde, they have raided our liquor supplies, and drained them ALL.  We had a year's worth of liquor a month ago.  This thirst is unnatural.  I have redoubled my efforts to contain them, and I will see to excising the corruption from their ranks personally soon.  In other news, we have nearly completed Project: Plug it Up.

11th Felsite

I fear our doom is sealed.  We have lost so many, in so short a span.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Dear Adil was the first to go.  A minor accident at the first stage of the Project. Luckily I have identified an uncorrupted miner among the immigrants - the project will continue.

But it did not end there.  The final struggle was a brutal one, and many good dwarves lost their lives containing the threat that was upon us.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It all began when one of their number suddenly started acting strangely. All at once the immigrants wanted to be allowed out of his presence as he began acting more and more strangely.  Dear Zasit took it upon himself to have words with them, to try to persuade them to be calm, even as I sawed away the last beams supporting the roof...  Bembul will not be happy.

But those were not the only casualties.  Several more dear to us were lost to the ravages of thirst

First ArKFallen, now Haika and Adath.  Oh cruelest of fates!  Bereft of booze! I had not until now fathomed the true depths of evil within these fiends.

I have ordered dwarves to the stills immediately, but it may be too late.  Perhaps... perhaps I can complete the plug, and we may at least die surrounded by good stone.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That's going to smell pretty bad in the morning....

_________

Wow.... sorry guys.  That immigrant wave hit me like a wrecking ball.  I had been hedging my bets with a huge stockpile of booze since the beginning, because I knew thirst could become a big problem FAST, but I did not realize how QUICKLY a surge in population would deplete our stores.

There's still hope if we can get the stills churning like crazy and a caravan arrives fairly soon.  If a tantrum spiral doesn't get us first.

Sorry about your dwarves - but there's plenty of stock for re-dwarfing, as you saw above.  Those 6 are still all unnamed, as are Bembul, Kadol, Sakzul (the axedwarf) and a few others.

Wow, that was quick.  Going to call it a night and decide whether to try to continue somehow, or roll back to an earlier save.

If someone thinks they can save it, I'll be happy to pass on the current save as well.

My vote is forge forward, Start taking food out of barrels to use for drink, by making food stockpiles with 0 barrels set on them. Then make sure you have people out gathering plants from above ground sources, and people brewing. Turn the labor on for everyone if you have too.

Then see if anyone manages to survive, or if everyone dies. Reclaim.

I don't agree with Save Scumming, as the whole 'loosing is fun' saying goes, it's not like the game stops. Just have to keep at it, and try to ride out the rough waves.

Hahahahaha, Hilarious. Me and Doc House put in some character development and they die horrible deaths. Amazing I love it! This is how dwarfs should act. :)

You're not the only one!  I'm okay with Litast going, I had developed his character about as much as I could reasonably expect to.  I'm actually kinda sad about Zasit though - I was looking forward to switching to his perspective eventually.

I'll probably write from Kadol's perspective going forward if we can survive, though Bembul could also be interesting.  I've always wondered how different it would be to tell the story of a fort from the perspective of the lowly laborer instead of an overseer.

RE: Savescumming - I agree in principle Haika, and I made them hoping I'd never even consider rolling back.  But this fort is too young to die, and from such a stupid mistake!  I should never have let the damn migrants anywhere near the booze.  Not to mention I pretty much killed both Adil and Litast because I a) wasn't paying attention during an intentional cave-in and b) forgot to release the poor bugger from his tiny burrow.

I feel obligated to at least play it out til its end, but after that I am not sure I feel so strongly that the world needs to be persistent that I won't start anew from either the origin or the autumn save.   I think this fort, and these dwarves, have a great deal more hilarity and potential for epic ruin in them than I have so far achieved.

Losing is fun, but losing BIG is more fun.

Thanks for the barrel tip BTW Haika - that might just keep someone alive.  The trouble is they are dying SO FAST it's positively ridiculous.  All the deaths I posted about, I think took place within the stretch of 5 minutes of play time.

If we survive this I'm going to have to dedicate one of our few remaining metal bars and one of the three stones I was able to buy to making a well.  Anyone know if they still desalinate water in the current version? (31.25)
