Exactly what the topic title says. The limit is set to 10. I had 9 babies in the fortress when I set it to 10. There are now 16. What do I do?

Well, how long has it been since you set the cap? If there were any pregnancies BEFORE they reached ten they will still give birth...

Also, immigrant families will still bring their babies and children.

And how long does dwarven pregnancy last, by the way? I had a children born on the day of bloody battle, and wonder whether this is a coincidence or not, to be born just after someone died. I haven't changed the limits though. I don't believe in coincidence, especially not in this game.

1. Atom Smasher.
2. Burrow in the Atom Smasher.
3. Assign excess mothers to Burrow.
4. Pull lever.

Pregnancy is 9 months, I believe. The game knows in advance when a birth will happen, which you can test by save scumming after a birth within the 9-month period.

Then probably the goblin ambush was synchronized with that birth in my case ;) Is it possible to have children from lovers, not married? My starting dwarves are lovers only, but newer migrants often are married. Since lovers don't share rooms/beds (in my fortress at least) and married couple share, maybe there are no conditions to conceive and produce a child?

Lovers never have children.

Children, as far as I know, are generated via spores like animal pregnancies, not via some contact mechanism.

AFAIK, if you have nine children, a cap of ten and twelve more dwarves become pregnant, you can end up with 21 children. No more will be born until there are fewer than 10, but this doesn't stop "simultaneous" pregnancies from exceeding the cap.

Unfortunately.  It would be nice if they actually had to TOUCH to get preggers.  Personally I'd make them have to be in private, then touch, and also be lovers to get pregnant.

It's kinda convenient for me though. In my current fort with dwarves modded to live only ten years, I have all the males on the surface constantly patrolling against tigermen and nigthwings invasions with no vacation, while the females hide deep below the surface in safe burrows and give birth to massive litters, after which the young are allowed to mingle until they marry and are separated, propagating the cycle.
