Metal Overload
« on: April 16, 2011, 04:29:41 am »

At last count I have:
14 iron bars
13 gold bars
5 silver bars
1 copper bar
9 lead bars
2 aluminium bars
34 hematite
21 gold nuggets
9 galena
4 native aluminium
And this fort only has 10 dwarves! I have no need for defense, as quick thinking reulted in a lava moat with a bridge, and a portcullis made of iron. So, my question is, WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS STUFF???

1) find flux.
2) make steel.
3) make a full squad of steel-clad axedwarves.
4) murder all the gobbos and elves.

1. get more copper
2. make some rose gold
3. make some rose gold furniture. Pink tables and chairs ftw!

Also, just make some iron armor and stuff. The clothes of your 10 dwarves will rot off after a while and perhaps you want to outfit them in iron mailshirts instead. Or, even better, convert the iron into steel and do something with that then.

Now I have even more native copper and hematite. I'm smelting on repeat here. Someone give me something amusing and pointless to do!

You mean killing the local elven civ to extinction isn't amusing enough?

Make rose gold large pots. Make everything out of rose gold.
Encrust everything with steel and lead and silver.
Make more steel armor and steel weapons.
Make large, serrated steel disks and fortify your entrance with them.

Fortify my entrance? I laugh at you sir, I have a lava moat! The mines which one day may connect to the caverns are guarded by cave-in sections. (Will function as wall in case of siege from the caverns or circus.) My last stand area has water, food and protection. This map is very easy for a haunted biome.  :P

Lava moat or no - there is nothing wrong with a bunch of weapon traps in front and behind your drawbridge.

But heck, if you are so desperate about your metal overflow, just pave everything with steel or whatever.

Creation of traps?

use lava safe stone for mechanisms, then fill with iron components.

next: build it in a lava floodable corridor that can also be drained.

effect: self cleaning invasion destroyer.

note: build a second entrance for just in case scenatios.

Other: Build a tower/keep of iron and recreate Barad-Dur?

Hm. Can I replace every surface in my fort with metal? Just wondering. (Not mines, just the lived in parts)

A lava moat won't stop a flying building destroyer. Make bins out of copper or bronze. And gold barrels for your drinks. Train marksdwarves, steel armor, bone bolts.

Better still, create gold statues for the dining room and bedrooms. Gold floors, gold pillars etc. are good because they can be recycled later if you ever need the gold.

I just took my first look at the haunted mountains surrounding my little valley. Fuck. There are over 30 exposed veins of metals, and probably more within. I have a lot of work to do. Is it possible to stockpile ores into bins?

You can put the smelted bars into bins (which you can make out of metal, btw), but the easiest way of dealing with the loose ores is to designate a 1 tile garbage dump outside your smelters, go to the stocks section of the z-menu and order all the ores dumped. When you want to use the ores again, just d>c the pile. Yay quantum stockpiles - good for more than just loose stone!

Do like me. Build a fortress off gold!

My current embark has 500K gold in it so I am busy moating myself in and then building a fortress off pure gold! It will have 3 towers. A golden sleeping place and a grand meeting hall :p

If I ever get that far off course!
