How do you "shut off" a gear assembly without destroying it?

According to the wiki, http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Gear_assemblies, linking a lever to a gear assembly and pulling it would cause the gear assembly to deconstruct. While it usually isn't too much of a hassle to replace the gear assembly, I still wanted to know if there was any way to temporarily "stop" a gear assembly without deconstructing it.
Is there any in-game function that does this or is there some sort of dwarfy mechanical contraption that allows gear assemblies to stop transferring power without breaking them?

Only if it's "hanging". Just build the gear on a floor instead of over an open space, and you can turn it on and off without having it de-construct.

Make sure that there's nothing "hanging" from it, though... such as a Windmill above, or a Waterwheel adjacent.

Linking a lever to a gear assembly and pulling the lever causes the gear assembly to act as if it was no longer there for the purpose of transferring power and providing support.  If some other mechanism was relying entirely on the gear assembly for support, that mechanism will collapse.  If the gear assembly was being supported by another mechanism from the side or top, it will collapse.  To keep from anything collapsing, build the gear assembly on a solid floor, and build anything connected to it on a solid floor.
