!!Science!! Magma and ponds
« on: April 16, 2011, 01:56:37 am »

I had some inadvertent !!Science! while working on a obsidian creation system. Dumping a bucket of water on magma results in steam, but no obsidian forming. This leads me to one of two potential conclusions.

1. Water dumped from a bucket is an item until it hits the ground. This item cant cool but still boils away.
2. Obsidian requires more then 1/7 water to be formed.

Can anyone verify this dwarf science? Is this already know to the community?

Try dumping the water from MORE than one level above.

Waaait... so you're saying you can create obsidian with one bucket of water if you drop it from 1 level above? And all the time I spent building ponds over retracting bridges to achieve this was for not? :'(

You can designate a pit/pond under 'i' - make sure you designate it as 'pond' rather than 'pit. You need a spare bucket that a dwarf will then use to transport water into the pond. More info: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Activity_zone#Pit.2FPond

Magma piston.  Look for that on the board somewhere.  Not as reusable as pump stacks, but you get magma at the top

Can I dig down 7 levels and fill up an indoor pond? Or will it all evaporate eventually?

The only water that evaporates is water that is 1/7 and water that is in ponds in hot biomes.  If you fill a hole underground with a bucket brigade it wont evaporate.
