Did I just solve well infiltrators?
« on: April 15, 2011, 06:43:58 pm »

I think I may have found out how to deal with building destroyers and invaders going through wells!

Building destroyers cannot destroy buildings on another Z-level, so I think this would work. The water pressure causes the water to go past the grate, but creatures are still blocked out. The dwarves are safe from Giant Olms and other monsters that might want to have Fun!

Yes, that has been mentioned before. I've tried it in my last few forts and it seems to work perfectly. Just don't try to use one riser to feed multiple j pipes on multiple floors, that won't work as only the bottom j will get any pressure.

I use Fortifications inside the plumbing.

I use Fortifications inside the plumbing.

Pressure can push things past fortifications. It can't push things up a z-level, through a grate.

Wasn't that fixed? I haven't seen it happen since 40d.

If a fortification has 7/7, then things can float/swim through it.

You know, you could just put a bridge in your inlet line, fill the cistern, then close the inlet line off and let the dwarfs drink from the sealed cistern for 10 years....

....or feed your cistern from the underside of an aquifer....

Simple and practical. Clearly you are no dwarf. Into the torment pit with thee, elf.

What about using raised bridges instead of floodgates inside the plumbing? It stops water and invaders alike, so its like a indestructible floodgate.

I prefer the "sealed cistern" method as well.  Fill the cistern, then seal it up.

Alternately, I will use a manually operated screw pump to pull from the river / lake, where the output water flows through multiple fortification tiles before flowing downward into the cistern.  If some foul beastie does attempt to break the pump to sneak past and into the fort, the 7/7 water past the pump will flow backward, flushing the beastie back a bit and simultaneously exposing the fortification tiles (which are then impassable).

The other thing that helps well infiltrators is that wells work any number of z-levels away (thus the rope & bucket), so feel free to put a large drop in the way.  F.B. will still get up though, if they fly

I usually use a bridge too. Or an aquifer, my last few maps have had them so I have unlimited trouble-free water. I used to make a cistern for my magma forges too but recently I have started just putting them right over the magma sea and rigging everything with cage traps. It is a lot less work and I get to play with fire imps.

That's what this is for. The mobs can't go through the grate, and also can't destroy it.
