Windows 7 is pretty good. I mostly switched to linux because windows 7 is also pretty expensive, and Linux is easier for most of what I want to do

Microsoft gives software to students, so I got windows 7 and a fully licensed copy of Visual Studio 2010 for free. I could have also got the new MSOffice, but it annoys me, so I use open office.

Hell yea free shit!

Yeah I'm on windows 7 as well, I was thinking about getting a new compute and didn't really want to shell out for an OS again after buying the upgrade disc last year, seems like Linux is too much if a gamble at the moment but I might consider converting some time soon :)

Eh, if it's a new computer then there should be no problem trying out new OS's. You can always replace them afterwards.

You can install both, too.

You can? I always thought they'd explode in some sort of matter-antimatter reaction.

If you really wanted you could go around collecting Linux variants, and have a different OS for every day of the week. Friday is vista day, because nobody does any work on Friday.

Yeah, you can have linux/windows/macOS all on the same comp, its not a big deal.

Just install linux first, Mint at least has a bunch of options specifically for setting up partitions so you can have multiple OS systems.

you don't even have to install windows right then, you can just leave the space open for it and install it if you ever want it.

No, don't do that ; install windows first because it overwrite the boot sector. Or you will have to fix it after you've installed windows.

Ok so the new comp should come with win 7 installed , I know I'm a noob, so I might consider installing Linux on top of that. Is it hard to set up?

Linux's main feature is that it allows you set up a system customized for your needs. On distros such as Gentoo or Slackware you get a minimal system with just enough software to compile more stuff after installation. You can then choose from a selection of window managers, file managers, shells, web browsers, etc. This usually takes from a few hours to a few days, but you end up having full control over your computer.
Even the kernel  (a kernel is like a bridge between the hardware and software) can be configured to run on your hardware and on it only, leaving you with a small binary that boots very fast.

Now, there are distros that do all this configuration for you, Ubuntu being the most popular (and in my opinion the best). But where's the fun in having someone else set your computer up for you? :P

Linux also comes with what's called a package manager, which is a program that handles installation and removal of other programs. Ubuntu's package manager is called apt, and it's both easy to use, and has thousands of packages for you to choose from.

If you're knew to Linux and don't want to spend a day or two configuring your computer, go with Ubuntu.

No, not at all. The Ubuntu installer sets it up for you in just a few clicks.

Again, get Mint. Can do everything Ubuntu can do, but its cooler.

there's a reason why it is gaining ground so quickly on Ubuntu's market share.

No no no, Ubuntu is developed by Canonical, this means tons of support and stuff. The forum's also huge and very newbie friendly.
If you want green, openSUSE is just as green as Mint.

Mind elaborating on that?

I'm running Ubuntu myself, so I'm pretty curious.
