One server I played on had some pretty awesome maps build to resemble (mostly) European towns, with hedgerows, wheat fields, flats, stores, churches, bridges, and such. There was also a swamp/archipelago style jungle map that I really liked. Finding some stuff like that would add variety. Still, haven't played for quite a while.

And then there was the Tribes-style server with jetpacks.

I think that they're the defaults, so they should just pop up normally if you don't add anything.

Yep. They're the ones randomly generated but always starting green in mountains and blue in river valleys, right?

You got that backwards but the principle is essentially the same.

Server test is complaining about 'could not retrieve ip address'. Otherwise everything works.

I can't say it'll work for you guys for sure yet (and this is laptop-based, I can't leave it up 24/7 or the battery will eventually scoff at such an idea and not charge back up, and then problems), but using the localhost connect at the bottom of the server page works fine. Mainly just need to know whether or not that quote is important. I know my external IP already from running other servers on the craft and mine kind ;)

I'd be up for playing for a few hours, it would be fun to play with some Bay12ers for once instead of the uneducated masses.

EDIT: Tomorrow would work for me too though.

I would also vouch for the old, generated map mainly because you actually have to make your own cover on them instead of just hiding in a pre-build tower or being forced down a tiny bottleneck. All my favorite games have been on those maps.

I am also going to feel like a complete stranger on the server.

For some reason I suck at Battlefield, and your Gears of War: Modern Warfare and whatever, but I am pretty good at this game.
I really like this game, it's FPS at it's essentials, with clear defined hit boxes and easy to pick up mechanics.

Well the problem which modern military shooters is they all have extremely spammy bullet spray weapons. Since aiming is near redundant it really just comes down to getting the jump on your enemy or ambushing them by abusing the stupidly small FOV. There is no over-arching tactics or team play. Just zerking with assault weapons and getting "mad" kill-streaks.

Poorly done assault rifles is often the main cause of spammy attacks in shooters. Assault rifles can fill a great many roles and can be up-to par or even better then the dedicated weapons that's meant to fill it's niche. You'll find that a lot of the games that are prised for their skill and tactics often have little to no assault rifles or that the assault rifle fills it's own little niche and doesn't overlay other dedicated weapons.

I don't think I'll ever fully understand the modern shooter craze. On a mechanical level pretty much everything is wrong with them, yet their popularity is unquestionable. I would like to read a full study trying to pin-point exactly why the modern shooter has taken the throne as king of FPS.
