So I went on a practically empty server. Far too easy, there was four a side on a small map. It took me all of five minutes to capture the intel twice.

THen I went on a populated server. FOUR AIMBOTS.

FOUR. FOUR out of 28 players. D:

-snip-
So, would AoS be a good example of this, or a bad example?
I find myself using rifle usually, because I was around when there was only the rifle, and I have grown fond of it.
When I do use the machine gun (or have it used against me) it is mostly for Mid-range fighting, cover to cover.
The shotgun blasts you apart up close, and can blow through cover.
The Rifle can win in a fight at long range, if you get near enough to them for a fair fight.
So I think the Machine gun fits it's medium range role quite well.

AoS does seem to have decent balance across the board for all the weapons and although the SMG and Shotgun are more situational than the rifle they still have a very solid niche as you've mentioned. The SMG and Shotgun do get some more use in custom maps with lots of cover. Those city maps in particular.

Shotguns seem to favour clearing out narrow windy tunnels and defensive play. SMG are great for both defensive and offensive trench battles as well as storming. The rifle is still the main weapon of AoS but due to it's weakness at close range the rifle assumes a standard sniping/ambush role as well as a rather mediocre jack of all trades.

I don't find the SMG situational at all, personally; its effective range is about three quarters of the rifle's, and if fired in short bursts it's very nearly as accurate. It behaves more like a Bren gun than the MP5 it's skinned as.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

When I played, I used the SMG most of the time; crouching and aiming you're reasonably accurate out to the edge of viewdistance anyway, and you can plink away enemy cover in a fashion that the rifle's rof could never manage.

Yes, they are still woefully terrible. I feel like I should throw up in my mouth a little each time I look at them.

Yes. Hopefully I'll be on shortly.

Out of curiosity, is there an official way to directly connect to an IP without using a third-party program? If so, I can't seem to find it.

Wiki says:
Quote
Step 3 Open this page. In the box after "IP Address:" type the four numbers of the IP address from Step 1, but in reverse order. For example, if the server's ip was '123.45.67.89', you would type them in as '89.67.45.123'.

Step 4 Select 'Dotted Quad', press 'Go' and copy the text from the second box, labeled 'IP decimal'.

Step 5 Paste the address into your web browser's url bar. Replace 'HTTP' with 'aos' and then press enter.

This address only works for computers on your home network. To get one that will work for someone outside your network, get your IP address from a site such as whatismyip.com. Follow the steps above to convert it.

Replace Step one with my IP. Although why AoS can't just use normal unreversed ips idk.

"Server connection failed" when I try to connect to aos:// via command line running of the client.exe. Games seem to hate me - anybody have experience with running through Windows command line able to help?

I made a .html file with

Code: [Select]
<a href=aos://2620187744>Connect</a><br>
and that seemed to work perfectly fine. Oh, and the server is empty right now, but if you give me a couple minutes I can jump on for a bit.

Don't use command line. Just put that into the browser address bar, AoS should load as soon as you hit enter.
