Rare gems, anyone seen any since the scarcity version?
« on: April 12, 2011, 11:50:05 pm »

I've been generating some worlds with a mineral scarcity of 100 for the most minerals, and using dfreveal and the dfprospector tool to find colored diamonds. After about 20 maps on 3 worlds, I can't find any of those. I'm finding plenty of kimberlite and some feint yellow diamonds, but the clusters seem to be too small to contain the rare diamonds.

I wonder if its not a bug.

Also, the value of these gems probably should be alot higher, as even before the scarcity patch they were 100,000 times rarer than spoilerite.

Cluster size does not matter for rare gems.
They can appear in 1x1 clusters (which technically makes them appear on their own in a stone layer)
I don't look out for gems in any way so I have no idea if they are scarcer now than before.

I have Rubies and Star Rubies in my current fort, generated in 0.31.25 vanilla. But I decreased mineral scarcity from default 2500 to 500 (which means more minerals).
I have plenty of other minerals on the map, including several metal ores (I think iron, copper, gold, platinum and nickel).

Hmm, I would guess that star rubies would use the same generation code as the colored diamonds, but I worked really hard with genning worlds and didn't find any. Plenty of faint yellow daimonds, which the colored diamonds spawn in, but nothing within those clusters. Does anyone know what the values in the raws do for gems? I'd like to keep the same mechanism, but make it a little more common for colored diamonds to spawn within the faint yellows.

You could try duplicating the colored diamond raws (But changing the names, of course). That would be the only way I could think of to make them more common.

Up their frequency: Might work.
Increase their number: Probably would work but also gives more
Make the FAINT yellow diamonds more common so that the colored ones have more places to work: 100% guaranteed, if you can make them more common in the first place with the above two techniques.

Do you know which fields in the raws govern frequency and number? There are several numbers, not sure if they are what you mean. There's an ENVIRONMENT_SPEC tag that has a number that is always either 100 or occasionally 1, but I can't see what the intent is.

I learned this from Tomi:

   [ENVIRONMENT:IGNEOUS_ALL:VEIN:15]
   [ENVIRONMENT:METAMORPHIC:VEIN:15]
   [ENVIRONMENT:IGNEOUS_ALL:CLUSTER_SMALL:9]
   [ENVIRONMENT:METAMORPHIC:CLUSTER_SMALL:9]

This makes Cobaltite show up roughly twice as commonly in a vein as it does in a small cluster.  I think basically it boils down to a percentage chance of using this ore.

Now, the "VEIN" and "CLUSTER_SMALL" things are obviously the amount and orientation you'll find them in.  The rarest gems are "CLUSTER_ONE", meaning they are found singly.  I'm pretty sure if you double the frequency, it will not affect their count (other than in an overall sense, only one at a time still will be found)

Ok, putting that number up to 100 for the colored diamonds means that every faint yellow cluster has one or two colored diamonds in it. The first map I genned had about 4 or 5 of each. Thanks for the help. I think maybe I'm going to flesh this raw file out to work with the new system, with much higher valued gems, slightly rarer garbage gems, and findable rare gems. Without reveal, finding the 4 or 5 gems on the map is tough... plenty rare in my opinion.

Or, on a world on which you've already embarked, you could do something like this...

[OBJECT:WHATEVER_STONE_YOU_HAVE_TOO_MUCH_OF]
[NAME:REPLACE_THE_REST_OF_THE_FILE_WITH_THE_DIAMOND_RAWS]
