The only problems I see is things like goblins and such being able to fire down on your miners, and traders/liasons getting stuck along the walls(since you can't ever channel away the very edge of the map).

My solution (not exactly part of the original plan) was to build a wall all the way around the lip of the dig.  (2Z in height, at most points, due to parts of the lip having some 1Z-higher 'ground levels' to it.)

My solution these days would be to have a 2-tile-wide (or wider) 'moat' around the dig site, with inward-facing ramps removed, so that ground level tiles immediately around the rim of the dig (ultimately a few tiles smaller, in each axis, but never mind) are their own (un-Building-Destroyer-able) walls preventing access to look down upon the work area.  At least ignoring the existence of flying-mounts and any intrinsically air-borne bothersome beasts.

Well I tried this, but I think I'm going to start over. 4 levels of dirt in a rocky wasteland really makes the mining slow. I did have clay however.

Here's some screenshots:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
-1 z level from the wagon's spot. I've only managed to start to channel out one z level. Though I have a pit down to check for stone. Made four supports for the 'castle/tower/thing' as well as five kilns to keep clay production up for building while the miners go at it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Main z level, 1 up from the ground level of the to be spire. Dorms to the left, food stockpiling, poultry and food workshops to the right.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Next level up(+1z) I have a hospital to the left, and barracks/archery to the right, with fortifications to shoot from(maybe). Thinking about putting a stockpile in the middle there. Maybe weapons, armor and ammo for now.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Top floor at the moment. Still under construction. Possibly a furniture stockpile if I keep going.

My issues with this fort come from it being rather large, a 4x4 embark, and completely flat. I have only 16Z levels above that it lets me go(might expand as I get higher? but I doubt it. Not sure how that works). And with so much soil to dig through it makes for mining very difficult. This has taken me 3 years. I have 7 legendary miners from the first group, and the first migrant wave of 4 is making good progress. But we don't have any sort of dining hall, and I'm lucky that the only dangerous thing I've gotten attacking has been a bunch of camels. granted, I've only got 27 dwarves, as channeling in dirt and building in clay really kills the value of things making migrants less enthused to join.

when I restart, think I might try and get a 3x3 around a volcano, and just channel down the sides of the magma. So when I decide to destroy it, I can unleash hot fury. :) Not going to abandon this, it's just really slow, so going to try in another world.

whats the best way to do this in order to avoid mass caveins?

I think i remember the guy with the massive dwarf-made cavern system mentioning a method with carving out stairs everywhere first.

Just channel out from the top one level at a time into soil ground, that perfectly safe, though I'd scout down for the caverns before you hit them with channelling, just in case.

Bumped.

About a week left before I start this. I'm set to breach Hell in my current Fortress.

I'm still working on this in my new volcano fort. Trying to stave off a tantrum spiral, as a couple dwarves fell in a collapse when I tried to channel over a volcano rim with nothing under it. Small bits, but dwarves fell into the magma. It doesn't end well.

I also have this being done somewhat on the flat volcano I found, but that ends up looking more like a moat than a strip mine.

I'd say go for a desert, or tundra if you want a freezing desert.

This little community fort might give you some ideas too.

Good luck, and it is a fun project to do.

The fortress will rise Saturday.

Deserts are still winning, but Volcanos are closing the gap by one vote.

Couldn't you find a desert volcano? I know I've had at least one - and it was flush with the ground, too.

And volcanos have taken the lead. Also, good luck with this. It's going to be hell (very tedious).

I'm not going to go through multiple worldgens to try and get a desert volcano.

Okay, I generated the world and embarked on a volcano/hill/mountain range.

the plateau is about 3 z levels up and the river and lowest surface point 9 z-levels down. The mountain peaks are 15 z levels up from the embark site. The surface of the magma is right next to the embark site.

Any questions?
