DF Water and Pressure. Silly stuff.
« on: April 12, 2011, 08:55:37 pm »

Well then.  I think this has been posted about before, but still...

Has anyone drained a cavern dry yet?  In this fort, I worked on for the first time on a pump stack, and after a LONG time to set things up, it worked.  And now I find that the cavern's water level is 4 and dropping.  Hell, the pump stack is dry.  I think it won't be a bad thing, water can be found elsewhere and I can use the fungus wood.

The other thing is, I got a little creeped out about how suddenly tiles were getting red with blood out of nowhere.  Then I realized that it was blood being washed off them dwarves by the water.  Not sure if this is good or bad, since they killed a forgotten beast with deadly rotten syndrome blood.  This is water way off normal dwarven traffic and I'm regularly running the Clean Map tool on DFhack.  In any case, syndromes... ugh.

I just put all the animals on quarantine in a corner way off the fortress, since they were affected quickly.

But nevermind that.  Anyone dried out any caverns?

No.

But I've flooded all 3 caverns completely before!

You'd need to wall off the lake edges.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

I have run into caverns that have no water source, yes.  If you are really concerned about your situation, I would suggest running dfreveal from the dfhack toolkit and having a look around your caverns.  If no water touches the edge of the map, then you have a finite amount, if there is a bit of water that touches an edge, however, that should refill.

Just try it! Its not like you die IRL if Urist McMiner falls into magma.

In my last fortress I set out with the goal of creating a "simple" setup to prevent animals from coming into the caverns from underwater. Before I knew it, the project had taken on a life of it's own, and developed into a massive machine that could be used to drain or fill the cavern lakes at will.

Only when I was putting the finishing touches on it did I realize, with some disappointment, that I had solved my original problem ages ago, and no longer had any earthly reason to be draining or filling the cavern lakes.

That's Dwarf Fortress for you. You suddenly get the spark of inspiration, start building...only to realize JUST as you finish it up that there really isn't any need for it.

Ooh, but now you sicken me. The CORRECT next thought was "ok, now how can I make it work with magma."
