Ok, yeah, my "looking around" was looking for hotels in Redding on google maps and picking the ones that had better than a two or three star rating, so that explains the price difference.

Actually looking more thoroughly, there's a Super 8 that seems to run ya about $60/night in the southern part of Redding, and there's a bunch of cheap hotels in Cottonwood, about 20 miles south. I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do, yet... The closest hotels actually on the way from Boise, where I live, are in Burney, which is still an hours drive out of Redding.

Super 8

All the reviews list it as a decent, typical, budget motel. Which is really all I'm looking for.

Why get a hotel if camping another night's an option? Even if it's not, I personally would rather just spend the night in my car and save some money (although personally I should be able to just drive home, living relatively close) and even though I'm sure plenty of people prefer a bit more luxury than that, it's a totally viable option.

exactly why i'm asking.  different people are going to have different preferences, and we need some sort of headcount to determine if it is worth doing.

Rainseeker has suggested that the meetup will likely be at a local restaurant, and if it runs into the evening people might not want to drive back out to a camp site, especially if they've had a little to drink.  Ideally, I'd want to try to pick a hotel that is walkabe from wherever the main venue is, but I dont think that is nailed down yet.

But we can at least start with a headcount of who is interested in what kind of accomodations.  I'd like to help as many people as possible find comfortable and affordable accomodations, and if more of us are in one place then there are options for room sharing and things like that.

I might be willing to pitch in, maybe for alcohol too for those old enough. I would challenge all you motherfuckers to drink-n-drive mariokart DS edition. It would be great of we can get 10+ guys to crash a hotel. We could chip in less than $10 and all fit into a room.

I will also be willing to host a carpool up from the bay. I will figure things out as the time gets closer.

I'm in Oakland, so if there's room, I'd definitely be interested in a carpool, and contributing to a hotel room.
I probably will pass on the camping, as I don't own a sleeping bag or a tent.

This is like crazy close for me, I live in Yreka.  I would love to find other people around here and all just chip in a couple bucks for gas take the car of whoever gets the best gas mileage.  If theres like for some reason no one around here that is going, then I would just drive down by myself.

I would prefer camping since it's summer. From the plans being developed it seems like the campsite would only be a 20-30 minute drive away.
Being that I am local I would like to point out a few things:

It will be hot in July.  Last year it only got to 115, I have seen 118.  It will be over 90 from 9am to 9pm.  Staying on the valley floor is a bad idea, camp in the mountains, or at least by the river.  The river is cold enough to cause hypothermia even in the summer.  People have died trying to swim across it.  Also, downtown Redding is kinda sketchy, don't get a hotel there.

Okay, so plans have continued to solidify!  I've booked a room at Marie Callender's.  The address is 1987 Hilltop Drive, Redding, CA.  It's a great location because it happens to be adjacent to no less than 3 hotels.  Time and final price to materialize soon.

Awesome, ill be in touch with a couple nearby hotels shortly.  I will aim for the best price, so far the quality inn looks like the best contender for value

I hit the attendance+bringing One Friend. Meant attendance+bringing two friends, not sure how much it matters on a longer timeline, but should still be noted

I'm from Eureka and my family camps at Whiskeytown every year. It's a great place and the water is way cleaner than Shasta, not to mention colder which is awesome when the temperature outside pushes 100 all the time. Oakbottom is nice, but there is another campground that's around the back side of the lake that's quieter. The college kids tend to crash Oakbottom just an FYI but it's a great campground. Clean bathrooms, well kept.

Okay guys!  Final plans are posted!  Make sure you read them, the cost of the event is shown.  We've priced it as cheap as we can so hopefully it won't be a burden to anyone.  Don't forget to vote if you are planning on coming!
