awesome.  not sure about the night before, depends on where and how coordinated.  anyone know who is putting that together?

looking forward to hearing more about the 16th.  good to get a hotel early, if needed.

Wasn't there something about donations required a few days ago? Or am I hallucinating?

Well, I not having access to the family car for the time it would take me to get down there, and not really having money for gas anyway, I think I'm left with the option of either walking or biking. However, biking would take about 4 days of actual bike-time, along some very questionable roads. Walking, not counting sleeping, would take 12 days, so I'm pretty sure I couldn't make it that way.
Hopefully, I'll make it to the next one. :)

Hey I understand the majority of DF fans won't be able to attend but you don't really need to post here to tell us, it's kinda crowding out the ones of trying to do so.

Last question, I swear. I'll more than likely be able to come, though I need to vote on the poll and check with my boss to make sure I can get the 15th off first, and I'm bringing a friend with me. As far as I'm aware, he doesn't post on the forums, but he is a Dwarf Fortress fan. Anything special you want me to do, Rainseeker?

If I wasn't busy those days, I would probably take a flight over from Norway(with some bus time...) just to get there. Would be frickin' awesome. Too bad, I'll make it next time :C

As long as he wants to come, he's welcome!

...I just realized that as far as all these people who are carpooling, there may be some people who have not voted that they are coming.  Here's what we're going to do:

I need to have an official headcount, so, as of right now, if you are coming, please IM me to RSVP, and tell me how many people will be coming with you if they are not part of the forums.

Hey, does anyone know some easy free/cheap software to use with a laptop to live stream the meetup?  We'd like to allow everyone overseas and in other states to watch!

How about next year, the East coasters buy Tarn and Zach a ticket and hotel room, and we have it in Boston?
Hmmm.. I wouldn't mind donating so much, it's been at least 10 years since I've seen either of them...  :)
Boston's only ~1hr away from where they used to live in NH

Okay, for the people who are coming, I'd like to setup some sort of group hotel rate.  I'd be happy to make a couple calls to get it to happen.  Here are my considerations:

- I don't want to step on the toes of those organizing the camping trip for the night before.  Who is organizing that and what are the details?

- Related to above, are there more than 5 rooms worth of people looking for a hotel on the night before?  Are most people thinking of spending the night after the meetup?

- It seems to me from the some of the posts i've read, that some of the attendees will be looking for the cheapest rates in town.  Personally I'd prefer to stay somewhere that is well reviewed, maintained, and reasonably priced.  I don't think we'll really break the bank anywhere in Redding, but some of us might be watching every dollar.  Thus, do we have enough people that can agree on the kind of place they want to stay, and still make a 5 room minimum?

We can take it to another thread if we need to, or a group PM chat, or whatever.  pipe up, chime in, opine.

I plan on coming and I'll, ideally, be bringing a friend, but I dunno if I want to camp as well.

...That said, looking around, I can't seem to find any hotel that's charging less than $100 a night, so I'd definitely be interested if you can swing a group rate. Else I may just settle on a hotel a half-hour, hour drive away for cheaper.

Really?  Expedia lists a one night stay at the Howard Johnson at $55, and HotelGuides puts the Shasta Lodge at $40.5.  the reviews dont make either one of those places sound super attractive.  Like I'd rather B.O.F., which brings back the camping question and wither we should be looking at a one-night or two-night reservation.

Anyway, from what I can tell about the local hotels, I think its at least worth shooting for a Holiday Inn or something, and that is more in the price range you are describing.  If I'm alone on the desire for a nicer place (and we're not talking about a Sofitel here), then I'd still be happy to help get a headcount together and coordinate people who might want to get a group rate somewhere -- even if I dont end up being in on it.

The general rule of thumb is that if you're booking five or more rooms, you can usually get somewhere between 5 and 20% off.  Sometimes it's just a no-obligation discount that is available for the asking if you register a group name, other times the organizer is liable for the difference if enough rooms are not filled.  Depends on the hotel and what is negotiated.  So we need some people to commit to the dates, price range, and kind of place they're willing to stay in.  And, I'm going to be blunt here, I'm not going to be left holding the line if it turns out that everyone flakes.  this might limit the quality of the discount we can secure.
