Of course, the real lesson to be learned is that you shouldn't have dig out the final section from inside the moat, you should have had him stand on the ground level and channel out that last section of dirt from above. Then he would have been perfectly safe (unless an alligator got him or something like that - there is no "perfectly safe" in DF).

Live and learn (or die and learn in this case).

  Keith
That's exactly what I tried to make him do, but he refused to dig from anywhere but the most dangerous part of the cave-in. I tried to wall off the other side, and my men kept walling theirselves on the wrong side. I was getting so irritated that I just decided it was time for my guy to die. 30 minutes of my life wasted on something like that...I frankly didn't care that he was a legendary miner.

Here is what i do when moating:

First clear area above designated area of trees and boulders
Channel the inner part, create a safety ramp at a distant wallpart, clear any ramps beside that safety ramp
Evacuate area and then overbuild safety ramp with a floor or walltile (from above!)
Channel border wall from the mid to outside

To avoid waterramps in the moat, channel one piece wider each side at the border wall and overbuild with wall or floor tile (from above!)
   |___|    1
 |^___^|  2
 |=___=|  3

Seen from side each number is a buildphase

No smily intended
|  is wall
^  Is ramp
= is floor built over ramp

Build walls around the spots where borderramps in the water make entrance possible (usually 2 walls per side)
|×××|
|^×^|
××××××
seen from above after completition
| wall
^ ramp
× water area moat or river

Count losses :D

Fastest and safest way i know

PS: typed this on smartphone,  hope one can recreate

Wait are you also able to embark with dragons and rocs? It would be very cool if you could embark with a breeding pair of both.
Wait how did this end up in here?

Best refer to that in the mod section :)

My current moat is actually filled by pumps dragging water up from the aquifer.

The only way i know of to make a clean moat like that is to use pumps to create a dry section of moat while my miners remove the last walls/ramps then turn off the pumps and collapse the access stairway with a lever... It isn't completely clean since there will be litter from whatever the stairs were made of, but at least you'll have all the ramps gone and everything will be the same width... Though you could mod in a reaction to make ice then construct your stairs out of ice so when they deconstruct the puddle will wash away...

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

soap construction would be working if you mod them (or toady makes them) to dissolve in water :)

+ make a bridge possible to be lowered into a specific depth in a standing water body, so one could make a nice cleaning plattform out of it

like seen below
the bubbles suggest soapy foamy bubblewater  *great to drown elves in*tm

(great art inbound)
