So, I'm all excited.  I have what looks like a very cool spot...nearby river that drops off a 10z+ waterfall into a totally vertical canyon, lots of wood on top.  I'm picturing a very cool fortress at the top and drilling down for good stuff.  Seriously fun. Well, when I surveyed the area upon arrival I had the idea to construct a wooden palisade at the narrowest point between the river and the edge of the hilltop, then remove all the ramps around the edges for a nice hilltop fort.  So, I got that going.  Then I thought...hmm, maybe I can dig a small moat in front of my wall, learn how levers work and hook up a drawbridge, and it'll be good!  Hey, since I'm right next to the river, I can even flood the moat easily!  Cool.

Now, I was worried about my miner.  I sent him down into the moat that I channeled out and had him remove all the upward ramps at the bottom, except for a row of five or six ramps on the outer edge of the moat, right near the river.  Perhaps foolishly, I thought that I wanted the moat to have sheer edges so that bad guys who fell in would be more effed.  But I definitely thought to leave the miner a way out, since I knew the water would be coming.

That dumb fucker panicked when he broke through to the river...and instead of just running two squares east onto the ramp and out to safety, he bolted down to the far end of the moat, where he eventually drowned.  I'm bummed to have lost my most promising initial militiadwarf, but I'm equally pissed to have lost one of my two starting picks, which is going to slow shit down for sure! 

Is there any safe way to retrieve his body and his stuff?  I'm a little concerned about not being able to give him a proper burial, especially since my first fort died because of spiraling bad moods, tantrums, berserker fits, and melancholy (oh, and trolls).

You can just enrgave a memorial slab and leave him to rot. Also, keep your dwarves busy to avoid the power of friendship destroying your fort.

Several:

Reroute the moat and build a ramp next to the stuff

If waterpressure is high, you could build another moat with a door/floodgate near the part with the stuff, hook a lever on it, open up, channel the ladt piece between the two moats and hope the water moves the stuff behind the gate/door which you then shut and after draining the water through any means (grated drain!), you retrieve the stuff

Or

Like above but you just damn up the specific part with a cavein or preferable ... magma!! Then channel the last bit until its 4 deep and youcan retrieve the loot :)

I wouldn't bother getting the pick back. Just buy ore and coal from caravan, build wood burner, smelter, and forge, and make some new picks. http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DIY

thats too easy and therefor undwarfy ... there must be at least the risk for two other dwarfs to die in a given project :D

Either use pumps to get the water out of the moat long enough to retrieve the items...

... or dig down to the magma, THEN use pumps to get it to the surface, drop some of it into the moat to create obsidian thus stopping the waterflow.

But either way: pumps?

I had a miner that was absolutely determined to die while digging out my fishing hole. First, he refused to dig out my -3 z-level from the 3 safe spots I had planned for him, and instead decided to choose the only one that would potential kill him. Despite me canceling the dig order for 15 minutes straight, and re-assigning it, he refused to do it the proper way.

I was like, "You know what? Fuck it, do what you want." And he did, the entire ceiling collapsed on him and I went over and started to queue up a rock coffin for him, and reassign one of my haulers to be a miner.

I couldn't believe my eyes, especially when I paused the game and saw that he wasn't wounded at all. The moment I un-paused, the little shit got up and started running over to the next cave-in I had planned. This one was over a 3 z-level pond attached to the nearby brook.

He stood right on top of it and dug that shit right out, happily slamming to the bottom of the pool and getting knocked out under water. Again, I set out to change a miner over and set the coffin down. Before I could pause the game though, I see the crazy son of a bitch crawl out of the water and dust.

Then he stopped and stood there. Not on break either. He just stood there, almost as though he were looking up at me to be like, "And what now? What else you got?" Then he scampered off to finish digging out my magma trench.

I'm in the process of gold-plating his entire bedroom, dining room, and office. I don't want to anger him.

This is why I learned my lesson. Flood gates exist for a good reason. (To drown elves with magma.) But also too dam water out of moats so stupid Dwarves don't die.

Can you describe how this would have helped?  Here's what the spot looks like:


My screenshot snapped at the wrong time...on the east bank of the moat, all the way from the river to that grey square on the water, there were ramps up and out.  You can see the floating corpse of the miner at the NW corner of the moat.  So, back to my question: You cann see that I channeled the moat out, then got rid of upward ramps.  At some point, I had to dig that final square at the southern end of the moat to let the water in.  How could I have done a floodgate in a way that would have helped with the outcome?

If you had extended that one tile wide hallway to to tiles in length, then you could have installed a floodgate there. Once linked, you could have opened the floodgate, dug out the final tile, then flipped the switch to close the floodgate before too much water had flowed in. Then, once the dwarf was out of the moat, you could have opened the gate again to resume the flow.

Then he would have been perfectly safe (unless an alligator got him or something like that - there is no "perfectly safe" in DF).

Just had my first successful level pull in DF!  I hooked a lever up to my drawbridge and it worked! :-)  Tiny, stunty little victories...

That's exactly what I tried to make him do, but he refused to dig from anywhere but the most dangerous part of the cave-in. I tried to wall off the other side, and my men kept walling theirselves on the wrong side. I was getting so irritated that I just decided it was time for my guy to die. 30 minutes of my life wasted on something like that...I frankly didn't care that he was a legendary miner.

Channel from above. Dig your trench, two levels tall, and at the bottom of the top level, and then channel out off to the side. It's technically possible to channel out from a level you haven't mined.
