Just how effective exactly is a single bullet?
Are they like crossbow arrows where they can maim their targets, or are they like real bullets which give instant death upon a shot to the head?

A shot to the head is an instakill. From  Arena science, bullets can also sever parts, generally feet and hands, and pierce armor.

EDIT: Oh, military rifles and bayonet pistols also have bayonets for additional brainsplatting.

Guns are much more deadly then any crossbow can do, I've seen shotguns sever limbs with a good shot. The only notable drawback is that guns they take multiple parts, workshops, and steps to create said parts to construct the guns.

I believe that they are a cross between the two.  They seem to be stronger than bolts, but the effect is lessened because Infecteds don't have pain.

Bullets work just fine on other things, though, as long as your gunman is actually a good one.

In theory, the world has been genned without caverns.  Besides, it's usually impossible to get down there because in most places (I think), it's impossible to mine through the Hard Rock or whatever it's called after the first few Z-levels.

You can get down to the caverns by mining through ore veins, but they are lifeless.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.
