Dwarf Cleaning Idea! (Yes, that includes Acid Blood Baths)
« on: April 11, 2011, 09:58:41 pm »

I just got an idea! Many fortresses have baths and showers, many just for the FB slayers.

What if you sent the infected bath/shower water to a holding tank above the front gates? (or the castle's moat, etc.)
The water would be possibly lethal to invader's, including their mounts, even the amphibious ones! Even if there is no toxic water, it'd be a way to fill the moat.

Imagine, a couple of soldiers are washing off from a FB battle. The poison runs down the drain, into the moat/flood tank. The elves goblins are drowning in putrid water, but maybe one of them can swim. Or maybe 5, it doesn't matter. They run off, and try to kill a woodcutter. OOPS, their arms fell off. OOPS, their paralyzed with pain. OOPS, they went stark raving mad from being covered in puke from a warrior. OOPS, they bled to death.

Better yet, infect them then cage them, only to release upon the next siege.
Though, doesn't a water covering prevent them from being affected by the syndrome?
Maybe if you somehow dried the moat after filling it with pus, allowing them to be infected, you could then:
Watch the elves goblins slowly and agonizingly die.
Kill them while they are weak.
Cage them for more syndrome.
Drop them near their comrades, spraying them with gore and syndrome.
On the topic of dropping them...kittens!

The poison in question would have to lack an [ENTERS_BLOOD] tag, because those poisons work by injection only and not contact (according to the wiki). If you're submerging them in water, clean water may stick to them before your poison does. I'll make a dwarfbath contaminated with milk and sand and see what I come up with.

I already know that merely walking through dumped sand gets sand on the feet, and the clean self job covers the dwarf head to toe in water - I hypothesize that water will be the only contaminate on the dwarf after walking through a sand/milk/water bath with no other dirty tiles nearby, and that they won't even trail the milk or sand out.

Hm. Not sure. I think at least one body part (Fourth finger, left hand?) would get mucked. Also depends how much toxin is in the water.

Try it with blood. Execute something in a pool, then dump the leftovers. Tell someone to clean themselves in it, and watch.

Good point. I was going to use a well - grate - floor line to clean from, but now's a good time to see if cleaning from an open source is different from cleaning from a well.

But remember, they aren't standing next to it. The goblins are falling in then getting out, so avoiding globs of death isn't an option.

Wait, we can tell dwarves to clean themselves?

Not really, they can do so themselves if you tell them to have a well.

Soap is optional.

Soap is optional.

I thought it didn't even work properly yet.

Only for hospitals, I think. But soap is not relevant here. We're conducting !!science!! experiments about goblins and contaminants.

Oh. Do carry on then. Please provide fine engravings of the results. Of note, are helmeted snakes immune to syndromes? If so, you could add them into the water right AS you dump it.

Ok, this was the setup. zLvl+1 had an open space leading directly down to the 3 tile channel of dwarfbath, and a well adjacent to it on the far side. zLvl0 contained the dwarfbath's top layer and the dwarfbait (booze stockpile). zLvl-1 was the dwarfbath itself, filled to 3/7.

When cleaning or dumping from zLvl+1, sand contaminants remained on the grate while other contaminates instantly disappeared. The dwarf would walk away with sand on his or her shoes if they didn't task a clean self job between the dump and their next job. The sand would inevitably wind up in zLvl-1.

When dumping on zLvl0, sand contaminates again defied gravity on open space while other contaminates disappeared, with the exception of my frozen milk, which acted like the sand and was actually recoverable. Dumped and reclaimed frozen milk made for a tasty and valuable roast. How about that.

When crossing zLvl-1, any dwarf with any contaminant would leave it there and exit completely clean. A clean dwarf crossing the water WOULD come into contact with "pile of red sand", on their feet, for exactly one frame of One-Step before becoming completely drenched, the exception being if they were already wet. A "dusting of white sand" did not cause the single frame of contamination. I believe goblin blood or FB blood would work in the same fashion as the sand, although it might get cleaned by a dwarf using the cleaning labor.

An alternate way of applying contaminates would be to drop barrels from towers. In theory, when the barrel hit the ground it would explode and release whatever it was holding in a cloud of putridity. (edit: falling objects from long distances have a tendency to make heads explode in putridity as well.) I've noticed experience that gypsum plaster will create giant messes in your dump zones while sand and ichor barrels are primarily one-tile disasters.

Did I miss anything?

Much !!SCIENCE!!Did I miss anything?
Wait-does this mean I could use stone as a weapon and designate a dumping ground right above where the goblins try to invade the fort? Or better yet, somehow buy barrels of GCS venom and GDS venom and dump them for the same effect?
