Oh Armok. That is win.

Make a bridge into the northern edge (the edge not normally accessible), and make your fort there! Once you discover magma... FIRE!

if it freezes, build your fortress in the river, then use pumps where water enters the map to go 1z-level above the fortress, so the result is an underwater fort.

Build a couple of foundation towers in the rivers, then build a fortress in the air.

I have some ideas, but I need to know which way the rivers are flowing.

You can easily tell which way the river is flowing by checking the map edges. The ones pouring off the map will go below 7/7, the ones being filled from the edge of the map will never go below 7/7.

I always wondered if that was how it worked.

Thanks!

I really want to see a building suspended above that wide... umm... the widest part of the river, connected by tunnels into the three sides...

I dunno. But I have a similar river structure on the map I just embarked on.

The problem is that there is at least one waterfall, which will drain the fps, I guess. And the rest of the rivers are down below in some deep canyons.

Quite fancy actually.

Only that there's an alligator in the accessible part of the stream.

I guess I am doomed.

Doomed to be awesome you mean. Your fps may take a hit but in the name of all things alcoholic why WOULDN'T you build your whole fort over that part of the river? Also catch that alligator, breeding those would be awesome, not to mention WAR GATORS

Reroute the rivers into the same areas with a large, useless, unnecessarily complex system of floodgates and bridges.

Create a structure coming out of the waterfall where you can throw the unsuspecting kittens into the "pit/pond"
