Welcome to Asbungek, "Cavelizard"
« on: April 11, 2011, 06:41:43 pm »

So, I was starting a new fortress after a siege completely rolled over my last one, and I noticed something odd on my embark. Under the camels and other domestic animals, a TON of underground beasts were added to the list. Elk Birds, Giant Rats, Giant Cave Swallows, Hunting Cave Swallows, Giant Olms, Giant Toads, etc. Some with crazy embark prices, the hunting cave swallows cost 700 some. But I decided that I wouldn't look a gift like this in the mouth.

Though I had to skimp on some skills, a breeding pair of cave crocodiles, at the cost of 376 points a croc were my choice.

My group is now named the Scaly Tooth, and we have founded Asbungek, "Cavelizard".

Before the first spring some eggs hatched, I now have 70 cave crocodile hatchlings. The crocs use nest boxes, and explode in population. Crocsplosion anyone? :D

Every door in my fort now has a chained croc nearby. And the hatchlings on the ground floor keep biting the heads off of stray groundhogs as they pass by. ^.^ Can't wait until they grow up.

As a bonus, now in my first spring, the elves brought me a giant scorp and a grizzly bear, to fluff my croc farm with exotic animals.

Oh god give me the save. Please. Dear god.

P.S Have you modded them so they're trainable? War crocs!

Ask and ye shall recieve. :) That's the auto save from the 2nd spring there. I think there's about 30 hatchlings at the moment.

I thought you could train them with the DM, though. Which you get by holding off the liasion from talking to you until the caravan leaves.

You running any mods? Someone might have changed the cavern beasties to be 'common domestic' when you weren't looking.

Nope, no mods, Just the lazy newb pack for graphics, soundsense and therapist.

And yeah, normally you need a DM to tame the crocs, but I still don't think you could train them for war specifically, they are beast enough. And they are tame from the embark, and all the hatchlings came out tame as well.

Do they knock over buildings though.

231. I am not allowed to do anything that would make a Sith Lord cry.

If you have [USE_ANY_PET_RACE] in your entity raws, then the dwarves will bring any animal they can, like the elves. That includes embark and trade
 :D

Also, I dumped 90% of my stuff so I could have 2 cave crocs.

The wiki says they can knock over wooden buildings, but they haven't done any of that in my fort yet. Then again, I'm not a pansy elf. So no wood stuff beyond beds. And if you have a cave croc in your bed, you have more issues...

Hmm, I didn't add anything specifically to the raws. So unless it was in the default I doubt it was there. I assumed it had something to do with the fact that in the western half of the world, there were no goblins. I figured they were goblin mounts that got conquered in world gen.

After realising our play styles and lay outs were completely different, and some weird stuff happened to the graphics, I decided to make a bee line for the bottom cavern, there, I built a small room, filled it with all the dwarves, and flooded it with magma...

Sorry about that.

I figured people would probably just check the civ name, then abandon and restart. As I only took cave crocs, and there were quite a few cave beasties on the embark to play with.

I didn't think of that...

Deep magma fried dwarf was more fun though. In the end there were two remaining [Your leader and some planter] so I ordered them to attack the human pikemen who came with a caravan.

I also got an interesting artifact, it was a jem... that was it. Just, a jem.

So the cave crocodiles outnumber the dwarves? Maybe you should have the cave crocodiles as the masters of your fortress.
