I am not sure if this is a bug either. But i don't know how it's suposed to work.
I started my fort next to a lake on the beach and started digging down (i am two levels below lake level) when i struck some damp clay(rock) a level below. Digging it away made that level turn into water but it got no access to no other water. I know there has been some talk about a water table from below but is this it. (Also found ¤%#% loads of iron ore a bit away which is nice for a level that warned me about the lack of rock but thats another/not a bug possible bug story)

The bug report might be damp walls with not water access that turnes into water when dug away. If it's not a bug then well then it's not and the whole thing can be ignored. It could be a feature.

sounds to me like you dug into a water table, which filled up the space you dug out with water. Sounds perfectly normal and natural to me.
