Dwarf military ignoring burrow defend order

Ok, ignoring might not be the right word. I assigned my military to guard a burrow that is basically my entrance to the caverns. I've had a few trog and elk bird invasions, so i figured a 6 man standing guard was a good idea. It all started fine, the guards holding position in the burrow, but now they are all stood in their bedrooms with "Defend burrow" as the job status, but they are clearly nowhere near the actual burrow they are supposed to be defending... any ideas?

What's the minimum number required for the order? One should be enough. Also, did you remember to issue the order for every month of the alert?

And did you flip the squads from inactive to active/training in the squad menu?
