I have a fortress of 169 dwarves, and they are still rather happy about everything. Then again, they're dwarves.

It's also got a 1:3 ratio of children, even with the genophage unleashed on them. It's about one or two deaths away from being Lord of the Flies.

Dwarf Fortress also kinda operates like Tibet when the Dali Lama ruled it. That is, the nobility lives in utter luxury and everyone else in absolute poverty, and failure to fulfill their desires leads to horrific mutilations and unspeakable tortures.

No.  It is not socialist or communist. Dwarf Fortress is a classic example of what is known as a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_economy. It is a type of command economy, but it isn't communism.

UnrealJake has a point.  Small groups of people struggling to survive will naturally tend towards communalism.  Animals, too.  It's a basic, inherent, sense of fairness embeded in all creatures.  If the Alpha Wolf doesn't give his Beta's a respectable amount of food from each kill, they may very well kill HIM to get their meat.

But in large enough groups, there always seems to arise some sociopath that wants things their way.  See: Nobles... or Presidents or Caesars or whatever.
