"This doesn't look like any spacefaring colonies I think I can remember. The people here, are they technologically suppressed?"

"If so, than wouldn't walking around with a gun gather more attention than it's worth?"

"Does this facility have any Early Era weapondry? For stealths sake."

"I'll... Take the surgery. But leave the wings off. I'll do better quietly than drawing attention."

You should stick to questions about topography and others facilities for now; these units record everything and might not be a good idea for it record that you don't remember anything. However, you are in a state right now where you might be able to say things even if you don't remember them; let yourself ask a question Warden-Ten would make sure to ask.

You feel lost, somehow.

You feel as if the lack of a clear plan is unsettling, as if you never allow yourself to be caught short like this. As if you always have an idea of how to handle any situation, as if you always have a course of action to fall upon as a backup in any circumstances.

It's your training, your programming.

This much registers as true in your mind, that you are honed to perfection, that you are quick of both body and mind, that you are able to come up with a plan on the spot. A good plan.

It is this realisation that tells you, despite the current limitations you face from your mind and memories failing you, you have to be as brilliant as always. You have to be ready to take control of the situation, reverse it, fix everything that you can and resume what you percieve to be your mission.

First things first, you need to get your cybernetics at least partially operational, you need to get a temporary measure in place to deal with the gaps in your knowledge. You need further information, you need to formulate a secondary plan.

With your resolve steeled once more by this thought, this determination you allow your mind to race, considering possibilities, fixes, things that you would not normally dare consider that may be at least reversed later.

"I want you to simulate the outcomes you would get using your medical knowledge, the recovery time, dangers and potential scale of repair that each method you view as viable may offer," you state, your voice echoing, reinforced with newfound authority.

"Simulation underway," comes the Elders response, the mask shrinking down into the corner of the display as multiple things flash up on the display. Bodies, all of them showing lines to represent where surgery would have to cut, exponentially increasing numbers for the complexity and the recovery time.

All with diminishing returns for the repair they could offer.

"This simulated data works on assumed scales of damage, formed from the earlier scan," comes the Elders voice. "This information may be updated with the initial attempt to bring your cybernetics back online via your shoulder ports."

You nod slightly, not looking forward to having the Elder plugging probes into your shoulders for the simple fact that you'll be conscious for it. Surgery at least offers respite, escape from the discomfort that you know would follow.

"Would it be possible, if my cybernetics are intact, for neural data to be uploaded to compensate for my current state?"

"Possible, yes. Advisable, no."

"Noted. It may not be advisable from your position, but I have a mission to carry out. It strikes me that a person of my importance would only be sent to a prison planet if the situation was dire. Thus, I must be here to solve whatever is going on here and desperate times call for desperate measures."

You breathe in deeply, your chest puffing up with a sensation of importance.

"Do you have any stored neural data that could be used to build a framework to compensate for my current state?"

"This facility only stores the operational data for command and guard figures related to-"

"Command and guard. Those two would offer a suitable base if an amalgamation of their frameworks was used as reinforcement. One of them is made to be cautions, to protect and to observe, the other of them is required to be able to quickly assess and control situations, to judge and lead. Strip them down to a basic framework for me, if possible."

You feel as if you're getting somewhere, as sub-optimal as this may be, it will give you an edge on this planet, allow you to handle any systems you come across relating to the prisons innately.

"Processing request," comes the Elders voice as the display finally fades back to just the floating mask.

"While you handle that, I require additional information. Are the people of this colony suppressed technologically?" you ask, rising from the seat that you have been provided with to stretch, to pace as your posture shifts to reflect your growing confidence. You know that this doesn't look anything alike what you feel a colony, facility, planet, that a space faring race would typically inhabit.

"There are various levels of permission with technological access in effect. Prisoners are not permitted access to technology that may be used as a weapon or means of escape without direct supervision. Staff are provided with greater access to technology, access to non-lethal weapons as means of self defence and deterrant."

"What kind of weapons?"

"Cyber-interfaced stun gauntlets."

"Can you display one for me?" you asked, frowning as you realised that you were not familiar with those. The display shifted once more as an image of what appeared to be a glove displayed, a glove that had external wiring trailing up to plug into a shoulder port.

It was simple, inelegant.

Beneath you.

"I take it that you have a stockpile of lethal weapons, ones that do not have requirement for cybernetic interface?"

"This facility does not have access to those."

You sigh as you lean against the far wall, looking at that visible interface. "Give me an overview and operational status for the facilities on this planet."

There was a brief moment of silence as the Elder processed this request.

Backup Command and Communication facility, current status, minimal operational capacity.
Primary Command facility, current status, unknown.
Habitation and Holding facilities, current status, unknown.
Fabrication and Cloning facilities, current status, unknown.
Orbital communication relays, current status, unknown.
Surface communication relays, current status, unknown.

This wasn't what you wanted to hear, but it was a start. It told you that there was a lot of work to be done, that you had any number of starting points for your efforts to resolve whatever was going on with this place.

This facility must've been the backup command one, doing whatever it could to maintain order and establish contact with the other facilites with no more than a handful of people. A handful of people and a planet that had gone dark.

This was all very suspicious, the fact that all communication was dead meant that this wasn't just a simple prisoner rebellion. It meant that whoever or whatever was behind this all, had done this in a manner that hadn't even alerted the Elder. That was assuming that the skies themselves were not somehow to blame for the lack of communication.

You had seen briefly what they were capable of, heard the fear in the voices of those that talked about them.

You needed your damn cybernetics back online.

"Right. You think you'll be able to bring my cybernetics back online, or at least assess the damage to them with a probe?" you asked, though you didn't wait for an answer as you moved to seat yourself once more, as you leaned forward to expose your shoulders, the remains of those wings that you felt naked without twitching. "Get on with it."

You could hear, though you didn't dare move to see, the hiss of the Elders tools as they descended from above, as cold metal tendrils brushed against your spine before you felt them slide inward, finding the ports that they sought to interface with.

You could feel the shift in internal pressure as microscopic tendrils burst forth from the ones that had entered those spinal ports, the sound of your wings being removed joined by the sensation of what you could only hope wasn't blood oozing from your shoulder ports. Ports that no sooner had they been opened, were filled with those tendrils.

It hurt.

The sensation of pain blossomed through your entire body as you felt the those invasive probes prodding away, exploring the damaged network that they found, while what felt like small surges of electricity jumpstarted it once again.

"Damage assessment complete." Came the voice of the elder from the screen before you as the tendrils slid free of those interface ports, as the dull pain that came with their intrusion faded. "Minor repairs have been carried out to bring your cybernetic relays back online. Further repairs will require surgery to replace and repair. This would be best carried out by a Fabrication and Cloning facility."

"Plug my wings back in, now!" you snapped, irritable from this invasive manner of assessment. Something deep down told you that back home, where ever home happened to be, that the position you held was one that afforded you the power to make requests that anything involving this was done with you sedated.

"Your wings are non-functional due to the damage sustained by them. It appears that they were the focal point from what your systems were knocked offline due to a massive power surge."

"I don't care, plug them back in!" you snapped once more, deep down wondering if that was how you had survived the fall, by doing something with your wings, wings that had been a focal point for refining whatever power you had. Wings, that had overloaded with the stress placed upon them surviving re-entry and the subsequent impact with the planets surface.

A clawed pair of robotic arms plugged the wings back into your vacant shoulder ports as you sighed, feeling your body buzzing with newfound energy, energy that you knew was a fraction of the power that you were familiar with. It made you feel less vulnerable though, more capable of carrying out whatever mission you had on this backwater hellhole.

That thought had you pause, realising that your rampant sense of superiority was shining through once more, that ugly sense of pride that made you wonder if you were really all that good a person.

"What is the status on the framework?" you ask, reaching back to massage your shoulders gently as you do so.

"It shall be ready for upload momentarily," came the Elders ever calm response.

You had to wonder, was that framework truly necessary?
You seemed to be remembering bits and pieces now, though nothing specific.
You needed a plan of action now, a place to start.
What was that plan to be?
Was there anything you were forgetting?

In the back of your mind during this time, it occurs to you that being discarded also means freedom. You could be a blade that when dropped, instead of clattering to the ground, gains life and flies.

Your wings could provide an important psychologic benefit if you need to negotiate, but they may likewise hinder you. Very much like your pride; where before it was justified and helped you shine, here it will likely only get in your way. You will suppress it for now, when you can...can you suppress your wings as well? As a stealth operative, you should be able to hide them when need be; did you simply forget you could?

The framework might not be necessary, but it will probably be useful. Just make sure the combined framework is secondary, supplementary, and has very clear boundaries; it must not interfere whenever and wherever it is not useful.

First and foremost you need information, so your plan covers a scouting and possibly spying mission to the nearest other facility, after which you will formulate more detailed plans using that information. You need to get out of this metaphorical darkness.

Before you leave, you need a map, traveling supplies, and some kind of respiratory filter since you will almost inevitably be outside when "the skies change". If no filter is available, you will need to pack light and go swiftly to your destination if it is close enough.
You might be able to get more detail-oriented information from the man that found you and brought you here. Or wait...ask the Elder the identity of said man, his companions, and what they believe to be the state of things. He sounded unaware of what you and the Elder really were, but what was that shimmering?

(I think I have an idea... Can we use this story to keep switching between fantasy and science fiction? So that while in the facilities everything is ordered (even if things are broken) and makes sense, but when we go to the surface, there's no telling what is real and what isn't. While in the facilities, night on the surface is simply the time when genetically engineered plants start releasing airborne drugs, planted there as a criminal travel restriction. While in the outdoors, night is when gods and spirits awake while angels and demons clash; where mortals must band together with their own magic to challenge the flow.)

All of these strange emotional reactions are perfectly normal - for a human being, not for a warden - and hot having needed to deal with things like this for the majority of your existence naturally makes them run amok when control is removed. Exaggerated feelings of superiority, fear, irritability and skepticism at handling of your body, etc. are natural but unfortunate side effects of your implant malfunctioning and you simply need to ignore them and do the rational, pragmatic coarse of action you usually would.

Edit: also seconding what Nivm is saying.

(

I would prefer that any stat and inventory systems we use be integrated into the descriptions; so we have fairly concrete advancement, but we aren't using points or slots. So, pretty much what we've done so far; listing off the malfunctioning or damaged parts of us and what we've fixed/jerry-rigged, then simple descriptions of what we're wearing and what things contain.)

"Make certain that the framework is secondary to my personality," you command, moving to stand at ease now as you allowed your ever growing confidence to dictate your body language, to allow little things that could only come naturally to shine through.

It was a means of observing yourself, a means of discovering details about yourself that would otherwise not have been revealed. This was the stance of a soldier, this told you that you had military training, that this training had left its mark upon you. This training, that no doubt tempered your efficiency and taught you to appreciate the horrors of war, of battle, of bloodshed.

You knew deep down that the idea of killing in more than self defence made you uncomfortable, that you were prepared to do so, though you would question the necessity of such a course of action. It was what made you stronger than others, it was what made you better than others.

At least that was what you assumed.

It may have been a case that you were the most heartless, blood thirsty bitch in the universe, that you were deployed only when the situation was so dire that it required extermination of the opposition. You doubted it however, you felt that while you had been jaded by an extended life, that the core of your being was that of a good person, a person who stuck to their morals, a person who had carried out these duties for so long to make a difference.

If that wasn't the case, you would tell yourself that it was, over and over, until it was.

You would make a better person of yourself.

For the time being you were free, you were without the rules and regulations that normally restricted you. You were able to explore what it was to be a person once more. Even if you would eventually return to the Imperial Peace Corps, be retired and rebuilt, your experiences would be sychronised with your prior neural backups.

You would grow as a person.

You barely contained your excitement at this concept, sparking a sense of curiosity over the issue, over if you were excited to have a chance to live, a chance to change, or if it was both of these things. A chance to be free, to redefine yourself, to be your own person.

You could establish new confidence, you could act with calm and collected thought, you could come out of this stronger, as professional as ever, yet more level headed. You could overcome the negative traits you had noticed, you could learn to appreciate and value your existance instead of taking it for granted.

You could become anything you wanted.

A beeping chime rang out from the Elder, snapping you back to attention as the mask that hovered before you began to speak once more. "The framework is complete. Uploading will commence when you are ready."

You merely nod, consenting to what you know will be as unpleasent an experience while conscious as being probed and repaired from within was. The hiss of the Elders tools above you had you tense as you subconsciously tilted your head forward, one hand moving to the back of your neck, to move hair you no longer possessed away from your upper spinal port.

Hair.

You could feel hair.

It was only as long as the tip of your finger, but it was regrowing quickly. This was enough to make you smile, despite the unpleasent sensation of that cool metal tendril plugging into the port, despite the pressure of it securing itself in that socket. You could feel the tendril unfurl, connecting with internal parts of your cybnertics, filling your mind with a static buzz as data was uploaded directly, bypassing your conscious mind as that framework was added to your subconscious.

The static buzz seemed to explode in a crescendo of sound as colours swam before your eyes, as you felt yourself briefly growing light headed before you reached back, reluctantly taking hold of that tendril to steady yourself.

Your smile never faded.

You felt hope, not just about your increasing likelyhood of completing what you percieved to be your mission, but over your chances of coming out of it a better person. In losing your memories, you had gained a sense of self, a sense of identity, new ideals to work towards and you had no intention of giving it up again.

"Upload complete," came the elders voice as the metal tendril slid from the port it was interfaced in, as the pressure you felt in the base of your neck eased, as cool metal slid free of the hand holding it. The moment that those words echoed out you stumbled over to the nearest wall, turning to face the Elder as you braced yourself against it. You had time to let what had been uploaded assert its presence, yet you had no time to waste.

"I require further information. If I am to carry out what I percieve to be my mission, I will need to ensure that order is once more established, that the problems faced here are resolved. To that extent, I shall require a map of the area with the facilities marked upon it, replacement attire and supplies. I will also require a tactical assessment from you, as to what you percieve to be the highest priorities."

"Understood. Processing your requests," the Elder stated as the mask that had been your sole company since entering this bunker faded from view, as a topographical map of the area appeared in its place. A map that zoomed out, a map that bore markers for each of the facilities, a map that was centered on your current location.

A map you quickly did your best to commit to memory.

"Keep the map up, number the facilities in order of priority for recovery," you state, watching as the map was dotted with little red numbers, the surface relays being first, followed by primary command, fabrication and cloning and finally, habitation and holding. "What is the justification for these choices?"

"Surface communication will permit access to orbital communication if it is still functional, along with allowing the first attempts for the facilities to interface. If all facilities remain dark, primary command contains supplies and weaponry. Primary command contains the means to launch a fresh satellite network, thus providing communication with the outside world should the current network be inoperable."

You nod slightly, waiting to hear the continued judgement of the Elder.

"Fabrication and cloning would be the next priority from there, as establishing control of it would permit you to clone guards, soldiers if need be, fabricate any equipment that you require using the factories. Habitation and holding would be the final priority. You may potentially require soldiers to establish order there once more, as it houses many thousands of criminals and prisoners of war."

"That brings me to another point. The man that brought me here, the two that stand guard concealed from sight, they are not of the Empire. Explain the situation with them to me, please."

"They are slaves rescued from from one of the neighbouring factions. They have been partially rehabilitated, granted basic cybernetics and are considered valuable members of staff. Due to their cultural differences and understanding of certain situations, their methods of handling certain disputes have been more efficient than our cloned staff."

"Basic cybernetics," you sigh, shaking your head as you do so. "That means that they have been outfitted with means to bend light, then. The facilities went dark, they sought refuge down here with you, and you have been sending them out blind, in an attempt to figure what's happening."

"That is correct."

"That's cold."

"No other course of action was deemed viable. Risking valuable assets such-"

"Assets!?" you snap, pushing away from the wall as you do so. "They, regardless of who or what they may be, are living, breathing people. Calculated risk does not begin to... to..." you falter, realising that arguing with this thing is pointless, that it will merely state in as many ways as it takes, that it was merely working with what was at hand.

They're not the enemy.

They're victims.

"I require supplies, a means of communication, a filtration unit," you snap, tersely as you turn toward the wall furthest from the Elder. "And for you to open this door, this instant."

The door opened with a clunk and a hiss as what you realised were seldom used hydraulics kicked in, hydraulics used typically for overrides, to allow the Elder to lock the facility down where required. Screeching metal filled your ears as the rusty hinges protested, light flooding in, light that felt almost blinding after the dim light of the Elder's display had been all that you had experienced.

As you strode from the room, the man who had brought from you shrank from you, appearing timid in the face of your indignant anger. You were appalled and you were impatient, you wanted to get this entire situation handled as quickly as possible, to make your voice heard to those that you answered to about your disgust at how the AI had managed these people as no more than another resource.

You had heard, though you were uncertain now what the Elders judgement was over what was most important.
What was your first priority once you had your supplies?
Would you leave these people in safety here, or take them with you?

First priority is to get ourselves fully functional. are there any of those facilities which the E.L.D.E.R. stated are required for this within a reasonable distance? We can deal with the other problems after, as we will help noone if we do anything stupid at reduced power levels.

If we leave them here, the AI is likely to send them out on suicide missions anyway.

Other than that, they would be in more danger with us than staying here, so I don't know what

((EEeeeee! :D You are an amazing author.))

Snapping at the ELDER? Seriously? Talk about "things that are beneath a warden"...

Either way, your psychological hit from being without stabilizing implants seem extraordinarily large, you should probably up the priority of that fabrication and cloning facility. Lets hope that in the meanwhile this framwork you uploaded will smoother it a bit.

And if you're right about personal growth being important, that only makes it more important to do it under controlled circumstances, which means later. Just add to all your main to do lists and leave a backup of it with the elder where you state all the relevant facts to make sure you'll redo this experience with reiterating personality structures under amnesia and most implants disabled later in simulations.

No. We can't trust the elder. Personnel are important, as they are needed to run many of the specialized workstations, and he has blatantly wasted some of their lives.

Not that I think we should destroy him, just not trust him with a list of our objectives.
