A familiar, actually, most likely.  Costs 100 GP to get one, and he gets one at level 2.

Sort of familiar: Probably a cat.  Called Fuzzy.

Useful: Minimally at level 2.  At level 3 however, the familiar would become useful in increasing overall healing efficiency: healing spells tend to be touch spells, and the familiar would be usable to deliver touch spells.

The most useful would probably be a bird that gives a bonus to a useful skill, but they mostly seem to help auxiliary skills. Maybe a raven or snake, given your intelligence and charisma. A bird would only really be more useful at 3rd level or on, though.

EDIT: Also, was my guy there during the session, or did he temporarily phase out of reality?

Pros and Cons of Various Familiars:

Bat:
Pros - Flies. Blindsense 20' to spot invisible stuff.
Cons - Physically weak.

Cat:
Pros - Scent. Good skills.
Cons - You have no ranks in Move Silently and shitty Dex.

Hawk:
Pros - 60' flight speed. Great at spot checks.
Cons - Spot bonus only applies in bright light.

Lizard:
Pros - Climb speed, I guess?
Cons - Slow. Isn't going to make you a good climber.

Owl:
Pros - Silent. Great at listen checks.
Cons - Spot bonus only applies in the dark.

Rat:
Pros - Save bonuses are awesome. Scent.
Cons - 15' movement speed.

Raven:
Pros - Flies. Talks. Appraise is an int skill.
Cons - Terrible skills.

Snake:
Pros - Scent. Venom. Swims and climbs.
Cons - Venom is DC 10. 20' movement speed.

Toad:
Pros - Breathes underwater, I guess.
Cons - 5' movement speed. Terrible bonus. Terrible skills. 5' movement speed.

Pros - Save bonus! Scent. Talks, sorta. Great skills. Attach.
Cons - 20' movement speed.
