Swamps typically form at the edges of landmasses, around rivers and estuaries where large amounts of clay rich soil have been deposited. Currently, the swamps appear to have formed at the edge of a desert and at the exact center of the southern craton. That's pretty unlikely.  Something a bit more pluasable would be to have the swamps at the southern tips of the map.

Likewise, you basically don't see jungles forming right up against a desert. A more likely occurence would be that the jungles would be along one coast and the deserts along the other, with forests and grasslands in between. If you pick the east cost as the jungle-filled one, that would imply that we're in the southern hemisphere (or that the planet rotates the opposite direction, and the sun sets in the east.)

Of course, all of this is barring a supernatural explaination for why some areas are unaturally dry or swampy.

My guess, end-game boss is making the desert... or something went horribly, horribly wrong...

Or, since there is no key, your interpretation of the map is horribly, horribly wrong...

Doesn't Egypt have extensive inland swamps?

Not swamps, but flood-plains, so that when The Nile floods, large ammounts of nutrient rich silt is deposited upon the low-lands surrounding it. So, unless these 'swamps' are the creation of a seemingly ever-flooded river with a never-ending source, they shouldn't naturally occur adjacent to a desert.

Apparently, I was thinking of Sudan, which has the largest swamp in the world according to wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudd .  So it doesn't seem overly implausible for a huge swamp to border a huge desert.

Yes, but again, formed by a massive river.

And suddenly, out of nowhere, a river appears that conveniently is located in just the right spots to cause swamps where they are on the map, and stuff!
