Advice needed for heroic endeavor *SPOILERS*
« on: April 10, 2011, 02:00:29 pm »

I took the time to locate a demonic fortress in fortress mode and have dug the majority of the staircase down to it. I intend to go there in adventurer mode, grab the sword, and flee. My questions are as follows:

1. What preparations (if any) should I take while still in Fortress mode to ensure that the clowns are either unable to reach me, or unable to kill me before I can make my escape? I've been told when entering the circus with this method that there is a rather simple solution which makes the demons completely incapable of doing anything. Can someone elaborate?

2. My staircase passes through multiple caverns, and there is a section remarkably close to my staircase filled with zombies and skeletals. I don't think I can safely wall it off without them slaughtering my dwarves. If the clowns are incapacitated, what would my odds of survival be in a fight against these zombies with a highly trained adventurer now wielding said shortsword? I don't think the average meatshields would have much chance against clowns and zombie hordes.

Also, this world was intentionally generated with a high density of megabeasts, semi-megabeasts, and titans. It is likely one of these is present somewhere in the surrounding mountain.

My advice, grab the sword, sneak away.

With a adam. sword zombies and skeles should be no problem. Aim for the head.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

Have your fort craft a full suit of adamantine or steel armor for your adventurer to grab when he's there. Then, with the armor and then the adamantine sword, if he's high level, you'll have no problem in grabbing the sword and making it out alive. Just don't try to fight the demons, run, and you'll survive for sure. Zombies and skeletons vanish when you hurt them, so they won't give you any troubles either.

Now if you want to get really heroic, why not take that shiny new sword, and instead of running back to the surface like an elf girl, stay there and try to see how far down hell can you go. When you realize you are not going to be able to go on any further, run back to the surface, with your cred intact and some demon kills under your belt. You can then make dragons extinct with your new sword from hell. Bonus points if you take back with you a head of every demon type as trophies.

I genned the world with 100 demon types, so that doesn't seem too feasible.

I didn't want to give my adventurer too much of an advantage: My first embark group dug a path almost to the fortress for him to use (though they had to redirect the path several times) before being slaughtered in unarmed combat against the zombie horde.

My first reclaim group had three axedwarves go into a martial trance and slaughter a large portion of the zombies so that they could finish the path. I'm going to assault the fortress and head straight into the bowels of hell tomorrow.

I tried this one sometime ago... my only advice is stay the hell away from the demons who attack with steam, seriously. They are incredibly deadly and hard to kill as well, also there's no dodging those steam attacks.

I think saying *SPOILER* defeats the purpose of putting spoilers, as everyone knows what you're referring to, just type thinking out loud.
