Is it real? Can I really do this?

I have a new embark, with a fantastically flat area WITH A VOLCANO. It has a small ring of safety just around it's lip, 1 z-level below ground.

I know you know where I'm going with this.

I'm thinking of designing a game based roughly on horseshoes. Only no horseshoes, just stripped down goblins.

They are real. You can really do this.

Note that bridge catapults are... somewhat counterintuitive. Drawbridges, for instance, can launch creatures in any direction except the one they raise towards. Retracting bridges launch things just as effectively as drawbridges except with no directions omitted. Actually, drawbridges can launch in the direction they raise towards, but the wall the bridge forms will block the launched critters. Finally, note that if a creature is launched upwards, they won't be launched very much horizontally. I'd suggest you built your bridgapult trap with a roof over top of it and a wall around the perimeter away from the volcano, and make sure that enemies will be launched multiple times to help ensure that they get launched where you want them to be.

I was wondering about this. How far on average are the shots? I need to know how close to build to the volcano.

Also, what happens if I shoot them to the edge of the map? Do they hit an invisible wall, or do they go outside of the embark location?

I believe you can literally fling them off the map.

And the only way to know how far to build is to test.  If you don't want to waste any goblins on tests, use a stone, it should fly it much the same manner.

Retracting bridges throw objects up to 3 tiles away in X, Y, and Z, directions, and throw creatures up to 3 tiles X and Y (but keep them on the same Z-level).  Raising drawbridges are the same, but throw creatures and objects 11 tiles rather than 3.  The direction and distance are random.  Raising bridges form a wall on one edge when thrown, which blocks creatures from being thrown in the direction the bridge raises.  Objects can still be thrown in that direction if they happen to be thrown upwards and pass over the wall.

Creatures and objects thrown move in a straight line until they've moved enough or hit something, then they fall if over open space.  I don't know what happens if you fling something off the map.

Remember that if overly heavy units are on a bridge it can't be raised/opened. I hear floor grates don't have this problem though.

I tried looking for more information on this, is there a place where all of this has been written down already? For example, is it 11 squares only if the bridge is max length? Do we know if the random range is potentially affected by where the goblin is on the bridge? Is it 11 squares on the z-axis as well, or just the original 3?
