My most recent fortress by a river has mostly survived on fishing, but for some reason my fisherdwarves have stopped fishing. There is plenty of "vermin fish" in the water. When I try to set a zone for them to fish in it says "fishing (0)" as if there is no water there. Does anybody know why this is?

Its happened to me too, though they occasionally go back one at a time. Early on i had a long line of rotting mussel corpses from when my first fisher just went nuts and fished for a season straight.

Maybe you caused some animals to go extinct? I know you can do it with creatures, but I'm not sure about vermin.

No, I see loads of shad and rainbow trout in the river. I dunno, I just hope he starts again.

I've seen this happen too when I dug an artificial fishing hole to go under my walls into my base. Eventually, fish came to that area and the 0 turned into a proper number.

My suggestion? While you're trying to figure that out, start gathering plants with like, 3-4 dwarfs. Or, if that's not an option, slaughter animals. If you don't have animals to slaughter, start trapping/hunting some.

I just think it is weird that there ARE vermin fish, but my dorfs won't catch them.......

Embark with two hens, and a rooster. Build a nest box, or two. Of course, with as much as dwarves drink, eating prepared meals made from the eggs may cause a need for ventilation shafts.
 Really, the flashing fish vermin icons, does not really mean they are fish. If you fish out the supply allocated for that year, you are fished out, in some cases permenantly

I read that Toady changed this, and that fish are an unlimited supply now.

Did you set it over land near water, or just the water?

What fish you catch are not determined by what if any vermin fish you see swimming around, and the presence of visible vermin fish is no guarantee that you'll actually catch fish in a body of water.  And even in the current version, it is quite possible to fish an area to extinction.

Aye, birds are a good bet for food. I typically use turkeys, since you can slaughter them for more meat.
