Beating the magma out of a volcano
« on: April 09, 2011, 11:36:07 pm »

If I put a floor over a volcano, then put a support there, then put a series of floors that was big enough to cover the whole mouth, and pulled the support down; would all of the magma turn to mist, and destroy all of the magma?

I say !!SCIENCE!! is in order.

Magma mist does not destroy magma, nor do cave-ins.

Oh. I generally don't use cave-ins around magma, so I thought that cave-ins replaced magma with X magma mist.

No, the magma just teleports on top of whatever caved in.

Constructions deconstruct when they cave-in anyways. Try casting obsidian to displace the magma.

What if you build a pillar of walls a few z-levels high, suspended with a support to an arch of walls, attaching the support to a lever? If I dropped that in the magma, would it displace the magma and cause an eruption, or do walls also deconstruct during cave-ins?

Maybe if you used natural walls (Obsidian?), then we might be able to empty out the volcano. I don't know. I posted the thread

Dropping natural walls into any body of magma will displace it instantly above the caved-in walls, effectively causing an eruption. The same idea has been deliberately used to "piston" the magma to the surface for convenient use in cases where there is no surface volcano.

So yeah, unless you want to displace the magma from the volcano onto your landscape, I'd suggest something else. ;D
I haven't tried this myself, but you might drain the magma off the edge of the map (I'm not sure if the magma will move fast enough to be plausible, though) or beating it into oblivion with a few atom smashers.

I was just wanting to make my volcano erupt. Glad to know it's possible.

Of course, if the bottom of the volcano is made of SMR, then it won't work...

And isn't the bottom of a volcano pretty much always made of SMR? If you have a magma sea anyway.

Someone setup pump stacks inside the volcano, using them to make it erupt.
