"Cripes, Daniel, don't shoot, you idiot" exclaimed Hugh. "They'll ricochet off the metal plate!"

Hugh fishes out one of his Tesla Grenades. "Everyone, turn off your cell-phones," he yells as he throws it at the robots.

Blanket grips up the radio and quietly begins to think.

"Squaddie Alpha November, pleases calm down. State your location and situation, and I will be right there with birthday hats."

Meanwhile...

The Dead rose quickly. It was like a virus and even the walls started to crackle with arcane energy and electricity. They all started out the same way with the syntax error, but then something stranger happened.

"ERROR: THE CLOUD IS OVER, BUT THE WAR IS FAR FROM DONE." They said in perfect unison. The marched closer and closer.

They died with the tesla grenade, but their mouths still mouthed their chant.

"What in the hell?"

Daniel goes to each one, and attempts to stop their mouthing with focused fire to the head.

A burst of static arupted from their mouths. Their brains had been fried, so they just emitted radio signals. Since on their frequency there was nothing, static came out.

Suddenly, one got up and smiled.

"BOP BOP BOP BEEEEEEEP BEEEEEP BEEEEEP BOP BOP BOP X263736. Y7539289." It's words weren't its own. They were from a radio signal, broadcasting in morse code and showing coordinates.

Hugh frantically tears open the clothes on one of the fallen robots, then searches for access plates, and, finding the power cells, tears them out, and the mouthing stops. He then suggests that Daniel do the same, instead of wasting ammo.

The robot continues it's chanting.

Blane rubbed his temples.  He was getting a KILLER headache.   "The drums" he whispered to himself.   "They're getting louder."

He looks the window at the damned monkey he and Daniel were shooting at earlier.   It was gone.

"doesn't surprize me much.   Trouble's a-brewin'.."

Blane walks over to the bathroom, pulls open the dusty mirror-cabinet and starts rummaging through pill bottles.   He dry swallows shit from three different bottles, then he puts a single round into his .44 and spins it round and round in the chamber

He takes another heave on his cigar, then grabs a walking stick with his cigar hand as he walks out the door.

...

Blane walks forward slowly, pausing every few seconds, keeping the stick out in front of him dragging through the sands.   Sometimes he can feel something in desert...  Almost like its trying to tell him something..

His concentration gets broken by the sudden CAWWW CAWWW ing piercing through the skies.   He looks up.

Black like shadows.  Birds.

They've finally caught up to Daniel afterall...

"Chyort! That's it, time to use long range!"

Daniel scrambles out of the sewer in an attempt to use his radio.

"Is there anyone able to respond to this!? Anyone at all!? Please, we need support! Follow this radio signal!"

Then he looks up.

"No, no NO! Not the birds!"

"Where in three hells do those coordinates point?" shouts Hugh. "They definitely ain't Lat and Long! Huh? Birds? What's up with that?"

On instinct, he barges into the nearest building...

Hugh takes aim at the birds with his rifle, and fires off five shots. Although he is certain that he hit at least one, none of them seem to be dead. "Goddamn supernatural..."

He barely has time to say this, before one of them flies though the broken window of the house Daniel ran into, screeching. another flies at Hugh's face and begins to claw, but luckily, Hugh is able to ward off the claws with his arm.

Inside, Daniel has managed to make an improvised flamethrower with several combined cans of hairspray and a cheap lighter, and he attempts in vain to harm the birds with the fire.

Meanwhile...

Commander Jim hated Alpha Team.

A retard, a man who keeps talking about nations that don't even exist anymore and a man who kept squirming whenever the birds were mentioned.

Commander Jim also hated anything outside The Barrier. Inside, everything was safe under the artificial sun. Out, it was just isolation, bandits and nothing much else.

Jim was filling out an form when a Chief Of External Affairs walked in and slammed a holo check pad onto Jim's desk.

"We have sighted a flock approaching Area 0-November." The Chief said.

"So, what about it? Flocks are shit if you are in the middle of one, bu--"

"Sir, Alpha Team is in the sector, recon."

"...Ah shit."

*

Flocks are an interesting event. Ever since the Frost Wars, birds have mutated. Mostly in the area of flocking. Flocks are when these mutants start to gather. No-one can tell what really happens when a human is outside during a flocking event, but we know the result: Skin and bones.

Something in Blankey's messed up head clicked. Get inside, quickly. Blankey ran into a building, meeting Hugh and Daniel.

"Hello! Birthday party! Anyway, barricade the windows or that flock will rip us apart!" Blankey said cheerily.

Courtland AFB

As the message comes loud and clear, a little red light flicks on notifying of incoming intel.  The light shows the comms room as totally unmanned.  Bullet holes riddle the walls, and the rats and maggots are well fed here.

Back on Daniel's headset, he can barely hear it, but oh its there alright. the Chittering.  That goddamn chittering.
