What?! Who dares speak against grazing? Grazing is awesome!  Herds of tigers guarding entrances, with some raw editing, herds of trogs defending your deep entrance. No ropes!
Because tigers are herbivores, right? Oh wait... logic. This is DF. ::)

Are tigers grazers?  :-\

That'd be stupid
With some raw editing

The only reason I keep my longest living fort in .18 is grazing...

I have about 30 elephants there...

That's actually a really easy fix. Just go in the raws and add a few hundred to the elephant's grazer number.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I think it's 'pastures are awesome'. Creatures don't have to be grazers to be assigned to one, but the downside is that as soon as something does come by and get chased by the tiger, your dwarves will try and chase the tiger down and drag it back to the pasture.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

No more farm flooding, PRAISE TOADY!

Something i don't know? What does it mean - no more farm flooding? You still have to flood tiles to grow things on them, ain't it?

No, you don't. I discovered that too from this thread ^_^

Or is it possible to simply remove the elephants need to graze in the first place? I believe it would be easier to live with.

OP: I'm surprised nobody mentioned it, but make sure to turn the mineral scarcity setting down. The default of 1,000 is very, very limiting in my experience. It would be a shock to you coming from .18 to have such few minerals. Most people seem to play around ~500 scarcity (lower is better).

Gotcha.

They may not be herbivores, but you can still tell them to stay in a pasture when they're tame.

Any animal can be assigned to a pasture.

So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

The default in the advanced world gen file is 2500...

I agree though that you'll want something in the 500-1000 range.

And the fact that hospitals work now is wonderful too (along with stone pots, eggs, pastures...).
