As long as i get my stone and bone crafter I am happy. would prefer them to be a bit of a moody loner type if one ends up arriving...

Give me the third guy!
EDIT: I'll need to work at my physical attributes though :P but being put off by tradition makes me feel like dr House...

Hmm... the first guy has "finds helping others rewarding", though, which is important in making doctors actually perform doctorly duties.  Are you sure on this one?

A Dr. House in DF just doesn't treat patients at all, which makes them magma bath fodder.

I'll be the 1st guy, theyre both ok

Great, now I managed to embark and save without any crashing (Thank God...)

Now I'll try to write up our heroic embark story.

Oh, hey, something I forgot to mention...

I modded in some additional spheres that I thought appropriate to a player-run fortress in Entity_Default.txt
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It turns out my character is a devout worshiper of Suton.  Suton is a dwarf god of nightmares.

Enjoy.

The rest of you guys worship the following:
  • Dutchling is a worshiper of Lisid the Untamed Chaos (dwarf chaos god) and Baros Graveburied (dwarf death goddess)
  • Darvi also worships Suton
  • Jake worships Idrath
  • Like Dutchling, Urist Imiknorris is a worshiper of Lisid the Untamed Chaos and Baros Graveburied
  • JohnnieRWilkins also is a worshiper of Lisid the Untamed Chaos and Baros Graveburied
  • Mecro910 is a worshipper of Etur Diamondfingers (mountain goat mountain god) and a dubious worshipper of Suton (we have ways of raising your faith...)

The full list of our deities:
  • As (is such an ass) - female dwarf - jewels, lies, trickery, and treachery
  • Id (as in the Freudian...) - female dwarf - fire and metals
  • Suton - male dwarf - nightmares
  • Idrath - female dwarf - wealth
  • Zagstock Playfulsullied (Oh, wow.  I so look forward to these worshipers...) - male dwarf - depravity and lust (for their corrupt intentions)
  • Edir Prowlforks the Poison of Hate (love the name) - male dwarf - torture, misery, and scholarship.  (Apparently, the education system is very strict around here.) (Insert "Oh, so that explains my high school" jokes here.)
  • Arist - female dwarf - revenge
  • Etur Diamondfingers - male mountain goat (wait, how does a mountain goat have fingers?) - mountains (seems appropriate enough a sphere for mountain goats, though)
  • Lisid the Untamed Chaos - male dwarf - chaos
  • Mestthos Massivesqueeze (... massivesqueeze?) - female dwarf - minerals, war, and fortresses
  • Baros Graveburied - female dwarf - death

Priest- "Have you thought about lust with Playfulsullied today?"

... I should spend less time on the nightmare fuel pages. Can I convert to Lisid?

I don't think anything can modify your religion - your religion and devoutness is determined at birth, and appears unchangeable, except in worldgen conversions to worshiping dragons who ransacked your town.

You could just say you're really only into the death goddess, though.

Or you could take up an alternate interpretation of chaos, like in the Authoritarianism vs. Libertarianism sense.

Um, yes, anyway...

I'm having trouble deciding on how best to go about setting up the initial fortress.

We're situated along a river valley, right next to the red sand spire on the eastern bank of the stream.

I prefer to situate myself on a hill, and just carve off all the ramps but one narrow entrance to get up the hill, but in this case, we'll have to settle for carving all the ramps to get down into the valley, and just hope nobody brings bows when they invade for right now.

The west bank of the stream has a lot of open grassy areas we can claim, and plenty of trees, as well.  The stream is not a brook, so we have to cross it somehow to access that half of the map.

The eastern bank is a very steeply-sloped area with little flat land for trees to grow on, even though it is a forest before it hits the mountains.

The stream has alligators and carp.
  • Do we focus upon the eastern end of the stream for now, or split between east and west banks?
  • Do we dig under the stream, or bridge over the stream?  Digging under may be safer, what with the carp.
  • How greedily do I claim an aboveground area for our embark?  I can simply dig a trench or cut away ramps fairly quickly, and cordon off a significant chunk of the terrain that can be easily protected.

EDIT:

Oh, and if you guys want to survive, I'm going to need to ask some of you to let me turn on a lot of labors.

Dutchling, doctoring and swordwarfing isn't going to be helpful right now, so can I get you hauling and doing general farming tasks like making charcoal?  Maybe also some smithing.

Darvi, I'll need to ask you the same thing - can you do some hauling and generic farming jobs?

I'll take up some of the random jobs like architecture and do the cooking until breadbocks arrives and gather aboveground herbs for aboveground plantings and the other various things that need to be done.

Well, without a pic I cannot choose where to go but:
1. I prefer tunnels over bridges, and if you build a tunnel/bridge make cage traps in it so we can catch some wildlife for a future arena
2. I prefer a flat area near the entrance so it is easier to know where the enemy is when they are sieging but without a pic I do not really know if the eastern bank is flat / hilly just on descriptions
3. If you really have to, you can channel stuff to claim above ground but if there is only one soil layer I'd prefer you to not channel, otherwise our stockpiles could turn out a bit awkward (building a wall isn;t that hard anyway.

That is just my opinion, there are 5 other dwarves at embark and plenty will be future migrants and remember that this is your turn so do what you want!

I'm not exporting pictures because we're embarked on a 18-z slope, which is fairly difficult to manage.

So, here, I'm putting up another copy of the game (this one just after embark) on DFFD: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=4226

I've designated us to dig into the sand spire, and then dig down to put in the first dining hall - we'll be sleeping in some temporary sand rooms for right now.

I have absolutely no idea what this fort is going to look like in the future, so I'm just going to build some obvious temporary structures that can just be converted to soil layer stockpiles later.

The only thing that might stick around is the dining hall.  It's on a lower floor, two z-layers below the stream.

Oh, and the aquifer is above us.  Comforting, I know.  I could have built above it, but then we'd have to breach it to build downwards.  It appears along a straight north-south line on the western side, so you can dig into the silty clay loam a bit before you hit it.  On the eastern side, it's blocked by stone layers from the mountain biome.

If I have time, I want to set up a small repeater or something based on the aquifer.  If nothing else, it gives the rest of the people who follow me a very clear idea of where the aquifer is.

Just to take the time to focus on this...

Sloped land is actually much easier to defend.  You can cut away all the ramps on all but a few areas, and force invaders to go along a "z" path to go up and down. You can even set up marksdwarves in positions where they can pepper invaders with bolts on multiple points along the descent by making them go back and forth.

Yeah, if there's nothing better to do I can do some slave work.

Anyways, I think the eastern bank would be preferable, what with the hematite and the sand and all.

There's a better open space for trees over on the west side, and we could "straddle" the stream by digging to the other side, and setting up entrances on both ends.  For now, though, I'll stick to the east.

I'm digging into the sand spire southwest of where the wagon is parked, and setting up our first shop there, digging down, and then across the little valley into the hematite and limestone over to the east, and getting ready to expand west if we need to.

We could set up our wood-based industry on the west bank, and the glass and such on the east.

With all this clay and sand and hematite, we'll probably need some magma workshops fairly fast, though.

We could  make a major tunnel beneath the river and charge travellers for using it *g*
